As I would assume most of you were aware, or I would hope you were, the escapist held a raffle [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93101-Five-500-USD-Gift-Certificates-from-SciFiGenre]. now here comes the bragging part, you see someone in this thread one one of the prizes. Can't figure it out? Heres a clue; me.

Okay so heres the help part, I didn't really enter expecting to win. I entered because I thought it would be nice to win but I didn't really think I would. Because of that I don't really have much to buy. Some is going towards some comics my brother has recommended to me, some is going to my brother under a certain arrangement, but I have about $90 left, now that's if I get all the comics , and if I get the things for my brother, as I have not actually been given any code or a physical card (yes I did win, the email with the line, "winner: yes" was a give away)

So I came upon the idea to buy some game that could be played with my friends. One game I've always had a slight interest in trying was DnD. Now I'm not interested in anyone telling me not to play, as I haven't convince anyone to play, and I'm not going to buy anything without a guarantee that it will be used. What I need help with is knowing what to get, supposing I get it, I would like to have some idea. Now I did search this and got another old thread with a similar request but most of the answers were fairly vague and the ones that weren't didn't remember there are 3 or so versions of the same book, and with the ability to actually look at a list of items, I'm asking you spend a minute and help me.

If you need to know anything go ahead and ask, if I play it will be with 5 people plus DM and no one has played, so just take that into account.

Also, for a third time, thank you spin. Without you, this gloat/plea would have been impossible.

Whichever edition of D&D you choose to go with, get the three core books. They are: Player's Handbook, Dungeonmaster's Guide, and Monster Manual. All you could ever need to do everything else is in those three books in some form.

You can start with the most recent edition (4th) or pick up the books from 3.5 edition for way cheap on amazon. I prefer 3.5/3rd edition but that's just me. Also, get yourself a set or two of polyhedral dice. These can be found at just about any hobby shop/games store. I've been a DM for 16 of my 26 years, so feel free to ask me questions via PM or some such.
