Hello all,

To cut a long story short, my friend needs to send me a 3gb video file over the net, but obviously can't send it in an email. Do you folk here at the Escapist have any ideas as to how we can accomplish this? The ideal way would be completely free and legal. If it costs something, we would consider it because it would be a regular thing, but we really don't want anything illegal for obvious reasons.

I'm aware of BitTorrent, Pando and all that shit, but to be honest, they look a little shady. If anyone can describe to me what these things do and if they are safe/reliable/legal etc: I would appreciate it.

Thanks guys.

EDIT: The obvious ways (post USB stick) aren't exactly an option. My friend lives in America now so it's difficult (and expensive) to mail things.

Put it on a usb stick and put it on the post. Simple as that.

*Edit: or make a ftp connection... that's perhaps even faster.

have you looked into rapidshare.com? you may need to make a login to do larger files but it lets you host them on their servers to d/l

I'm in more or less exactly the same situation, and I have to say, this really is the best solution if you're on a budget. Depending on where you go, you can get a 4gig flash drive for, like, six bucks.

Windows Live has the Skydrive, I think it doesn't matter how large the file is. It's been a while since I've used it, but if you have a Windows Live account (Free) then you get 25GB of online storage to do what you will with.

Mediafire is also reasonable. Might need to pay for large uploads, but if he breaks it up into small enough pieces (with Winrar or Winzip) then you could do it for free. IF you need to pay that is.

For free I honestly think a torrent would be the easiest way, unless you can find any free filehosting that supports a single 3gb file which I highly doubt. If you do, tell me.

Basically all torrents do is download files from other computers, the torrent tells you what you're downloading and the trackers in the file tell you where it is. The other end uploads the file to people connecting via the small torrent file you sent. Obviously it's better if you have lots of people seeding the same torrent so you can download from lots of computers at the same time but seeing as you're going to need to upload it anyway having only one place to download it from isn't slowing you down.

Only downside is you would have to have both computers on at the same time with one sending and the other retrieving, however you could stop mid way and it won't delete everything.

You better have a fecking good upload speed, but you're going to need it anyway if you're sending it online.
