G-Man is a fan made nick name, which is short for "Government Man". Not once has G-Man has been referred to as a "G-Man", but he was referred to as a "Government Man" in a random dialogue between two NPCs in one of the original Half-Lives (either HL or Blue Shift, or both, cant remember). Something about him snooping around the facility.
Actually, in the HL: Opposing Force maunual, G-Man in mentioned as such:

Opps, posted wrong one...

Yeah but that was made by Gearbox not Valve and Valve seem pretty picky about what they include from Blue Shift and Opposing Force.
Heck Shephard still hasn't turned up and may never do so.

That doesn't negate the fact that G-Man's name appeared in the manual (in a way).

That's a plausible theory.

He's called the G-Man because when people see him they say "Gee man, why are you such a douche?"
You are amazing.

Also, G-Man and Gordon Freeman have the same eyes.

Actually, the G-Man has two toned eyes; yellow around the pupil and blue along the outer rim. Gordon's are just green.

That's actually a big theory, but never the less, it is still nothing more then a Theory. I think that the G-Man is a mysterious person, but no amount at guessing is going to figure out his origin. I'm sure Valve has been looking around their forums and the internet and has seen some of the ideas about the G-Man and will proably look to avoid them.

The name G-man is never once said in game, it's just a fan nickname, although that would be pretty cool.
Yes he is, he is referred to as the G-man in Half-Life: Opposing Forces, G-man is a term actually commonly used, it means Government man.

If we ever get the next episode in the next decade, I think we'll get closer to finding out who this "G-Man" is. Considering time waited between Episodes, we'll get Ep3...2012, and then Ep4, 2020.

Valve has gone on the record and said that the G-Man definitely is not Gordon Freeman. The connection between the names is purely coincidental; the phrase "g-man" has been used to describe "government men" in a derogatory way since the 1960s at the very least, probably considerably earlier.

Flawed, in the end of HL1 you get a choice to "go to work" or the other choice of "going into a fight you cannot hope to win", if he really was Gordon from the future he wouldn't offer his old self to die would you? that would cause him to not exist in the first place.

The G-man is really Gordon's intuition as manifested in his mind. Want proof? Count how many times you see him in Half-life2 just before encountering either a new type of enemy or a set-piece. Seriously-- count.

He was at the start of the game, when the whole thing kicked off;
he was in Kliener's lab, just before the heat gets on you;
he was in Water hazard, just before the ambush AND the 'copter chase;
He was lurking around just before the sniper nests;
he was farting around in the "ambush house" in Episode 2...

And a whole bunch of others. This also explains the striking visual similarities.

I would say he's Gordon from a paralell universe, but unless that Aperture Science device on the Borealis is a time machine (it is), there's no way to explain his pre-cascade appearances.

Ugh, I hate HL2 discussion, unless it's about the ACTUAL FUCKING GAME.

OT, I'll throw in another theory.

The name G-Man is never brought up in any of the Half-Life games, it was merely pulled from the files of HL1 as that was what Valve named the model file of him, and became what the fans use to refer to him. It is presumably short for "government man" and is an old American term I believe.

Anyways this isn't a new theory, I've heard it plenty of times before and its a pretty flimsy one... Sorry to burst your bubble though OP. :)

Interesting, but this can't be right, otherwise other characters wouldn't be able to have any contact with him. In Episode 2 he clearly comes in contact with Alyx who ends up delivering a message from him to Eli, and due to what Eli tells you afterward its obvious Eli is aware of his existence and has had contact with him in the past. Also, it's quite obvious the Vortigaunts know about him, as they stop him with a force-field at the start of Ep1.

______________

What interests me the most though, is since way back in HL2 the vortigaunts have obviously been in contact with the G-Man in some form. There are plenty of occasions where the Vortigaunts make references to him in HL2, + Ep1 and Ep2 I think (though to be fair they are all quite cryptic).

"We serve the same mystery."

"Something secret steers us both... We shall not name it."

"Far distant eyes look out through yours" < but to be honest this could either be a reference to the G-Man watching Gordon's every move or a fourth-wall-breaking joke about the games First-Person viewpoint

There are some more, subtler ones which are debatable, but those are the best ones.

Also, near the start of HL2 a little while after the action begins, you drop down into a train cart and the Vortigaunt and a civilian are watching the small TV, and if you look closely in the split second before the Vort hastily turns it off, you can clearly see the G-Man on the television presumably giving a message to them.

The G-Man is definitely using the Vorts in a similar way to how he uses Gordon, in my opinion.

I can`t help but feel like it`s just coincidence but their must be something behind the fact that Gordon has been able to survive for so long other than keeping a constant barage of buck shot whistling through the air at all times.
