So, a hacker just hacked my inactive WoW account, bought me time, didn't change my password or add an authenticator, or cancel his card.

I was able to simply log in and change my password, and now I have what I believe is this hackers card on my account subscription.

Now, while I could keep it on there, and have free WoW until it expires, I'm kind of stuck wrestling with myself about doing it.

What, my fellow Escapists, would you do in this situation?

Send him a message if you can saying that he should know better than to hack other people, and as punishment either report him or continue playing at his expense until it expires or he cancels the transaction. Regardless, do contact someone about it, if thought prudent to keep someone far better informed about such matters than just yourself or random members of an internet forum.

Collect his credit card information, report it to Blizzard then get it outta there and move on with your play. And use safer porn sites.

Just my 2 cents :p

Thank him/her.

I know monthly subscriptions can be a pain in the ass, so I would be appreciative.

I wish I'd had that luck. Someone from China hacked the email connected to my WoW account, then my WoW account, deleted my highest level character together with my favourite character and got my account suspended.

Because I don't check that email very often it went unnoticed by me for so long that my characters are no longer recoverable. Now, I don't play WoW any more, but I liked knowing my characters were there waiting for me if I ever wanted to go back. SIGH. /violin

I say enjoy the free ride. S/he shouldn't hacked your account in the first place. Law and right is on your side, dude. Go for it.

I swear my WoW friends told me about something like this before... how a ton of people had their WoW accounts deliberately hacked into and they got loads of free stuff then the hacker left them be afterwards. I'm semi-new to WoW so I don't really know but perhaps it was something like that? Eh, it just sprung to mind there.

Otherwise, yeah, if the hacker wasn't particularly bright, definitely report it in case said hacker may make another successful attempt at hacking into your account and does worse than giving you a free subscription. :p

report it, play it until cancellation but remove it from auto-transaction or thats fraud.

unless he's just a really rich computer pirate and he wants to buy shit for people.

I'm glad I never had to deal with being hacked but here is what you are obligated to do, or you yourself may get your account banned.

1)Report the compromise and have the subscription removed from your account. Most likely if they used a credit card, it isn't theirs. It is someone else that has had their account hacked.

2)Blizzard will probably let you keep the play time because your account was inactive, and of course they want you back, but if they don't, they don't,

3)Check your items, mail boxes, and bank tab. Make sure everything is there, but also make sure nothing else is there that shouldn't be. I have had guildmates get banned because they used gold that was left in their account after it was used to funnel goods around the server. It anything is there that shouldn't be you need to report that as well. Sometimes you get to keep it, sometimes you don't, that probably depends on the GM you talk to.

Hardly a moral quandry; milk this opportunity for every penny it's worth. Honestly, you can't just give people like this a slap on the wrist. Make the fool learn from his hubris. It's called 'just desserts'.
