I'm not sure how Abrams "fooled" us. He was pretty candid during promotional interviews about being more of a "Star Wars" fan than a "Star Trek" fan. In fact, I recall an interview he did on "The Daily Show with John Stewart" where he basically said Trek wasn't really his type of thing.
So it stands to reason that when doing a Star Trek movie, he'd go with what he knows (and likes).
But let's not forget...he didn't write the script. That came from Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, two of the laziest writers in Hollywood who have demonstrated time and time again they don't "get" Science Ficiton. Yet they're continually tapped to write sci-fi films.
