A New MMO For Me?

For as long as I can remember, I've been an on and off player of Maple Story. Throughout the years of being constantly ridiculed for playing it, I lived through the pain. I stuck with one character for nearly five years now and he was insanely low level, but I loved him. I spent years grinding quests and collecting items and money. Even though I was terrible, I loved that game. But recently, I was scammed out of some of my favorite items (don't ask how... I just was) and it was the final straw. I cannot play any more. I've been thinking of quitting for a while and that was the final nail in the coffin.

So I want something like it. I'm not sure about World of Warcraft because of the community for one thing and how addicting it is. Plus it's an already established world that I would have to get used to. Is there any active MMO like this?

And for added discussion, tell stories similar to mine if you have any.

Not me, but a friend of mine got his WoW account hacked back in The Burning Crusade days. That got him to stop playing... for a few months.

Are you looking for something like WoW, or something like Maple Story, though?

The only MMO I've played is RuneScape, so that is the only one I could recommend to you.

There's no MMO as active as WoW in the same sense, but Nexon, the people who made Maple Story, are bringing a more mature MMO out later this year called Vindictus that looks awesome, but that's not out until this winter.

DDO is alright, but I can't seem to get into it. Warhammer was very fun, but there were never enough people on to play with to make it feel right.

WoW is pretty fun as far as MMOs go, despite what most of the world would tell you. I'd download the 10-day trial for it and see how it goes.

Hmm I played MapleStory for a bit, until I started wondering if killing all the bunnies that were the monsters made me a sociopath.

I played WoW heavily until it got so focused around endgame content that all you could really do is raid, which I don't have time to do.

If you like sci-fi and math, EVE Online. Or perhaps something like Aion, which was pretty grind-intensive, although it was kind of nasty when I played it last.

I enjoyed the free MMO rappelz for a long while. It has a good community and good guild support.
Currently enjoying Guildwars, but not sure I'd classify it as a MMO as far as people interactions go.

Just wait for Guild Wars 2 or the Old Republic, at least one of which should kick arse.

The community for World of Warcraft is just fine. With the number of players it has you're sure to get your generic asshats, but there are more than plenty of decent people who play as well. Hell, *I* used to play, and I'm not the least bit ass not hatty! As for the established world; You've never played Warcraft before? You poor, poor unfortunate soul. Warcraft 1 & 2 were fantastic for their time, and Warcraft 3 is still pretty damn good today.

And the goal of every MMO ever made is to be addictive. They want you to start playing and keep on paying for as long as possible after all, that's the same with every MMO whether it be EVE, Age of Conan, World of Warcraft, or even free games like DDO which try to sell you features round every corner (literally in some cases!).

Regardless, of the MMO I've played World of Warcraft was probably the all-round best. City of Heroes was fun as well, although I probably spent more time making new characters than I did actually playing most of em. EVE is incredibly complex, but only interesting if you can get into a decent sized 'corp' and are willing to invest a lot of time into the game. Age of Conan wasn't half as bad as people make it out to be, I rather liked the combat system and the visuals and settings were gorgeous to behold. Never tried Warhammer...

And the others I've played were either ridiculously obscure (Pirates of the Burning Sea was fun!) or just games I doubt you'd enjoy.

Never had an account hacked myself, although I know two people who had it happen to them. I was even online once while it was happening; watching your friends character just standing there destroying or selling their equipment and knowing it's not actually your friend playing the character is pretty damn surreal. He got everything back quickly enough after contacting support, but still...

I wouldn't play a pay to play unless you really want it. After 5 years at $15/month you've spent >$900.

Try some of the other stuff from Nexon.

Dungeon fighter online is like an old arcade beat um' up, buy with leveling and stuff. Mobenogy (or however that's spelled) is a bit like Runscape, only less suck and more fun.

I did. I used to play Combat Arms back in beta testing phase and then it was actually pretty fun. Then the full game was released and every single person I played with was trying to brag about their great computer, insult me for killing them, and getting past the language filter. The community killed it for me, if the screwy spawns and glitches weren't enough.

But some guy above mentioned Nexon is working on something new, so that could be pretty fun.

I liked Endless Online there at the beginning, but now it has become pretty popular and is proving John Gabriel's theory. I have quit, for now, but it was enjoyable enough that I may play again sometime.

I've been thinking of quitting Maple as well. I hate how everyone else is immediately better at it because they spend money on it.

Also, I can't actually think of a good replacement. I usually try looking through sites that have lists of MMOs on them.

EVE Online

Pick up a free 14 day trial at eveonline.com and give it a whirl

Why not. Maybe you'll enjoy a completely player-driven economy.

Or maybe you'll just like killing stuff and knowing that whoever just died actually lost something.
He whined about WoWs community, he is not going to like Eve.

Runescape isn't terrible. Despite what people say WoW isn't bad and can be fun when playing with people you know.
