So my xbox 360 Elite just RRoD'd on me the other day. I wanted to trade it in to Gamestop for store credit towards a brand new xbox, but I guess they won't take them like that. The employee told me I could send it in and get my xbox fixed for around $80. (Was he right about the price?) But if I still wanted to trade it in towards a new one, the store would only give me $50. However, I can trade in my connections and xbox stuff.

So what should I do? My Elite is already a few years old, but $80 is not very bad at all. On the other hand, I do really want that brand new Xbox. I'm very interested in the wi-fi capabilities, but I don't have a desire to play any kinnect at all. Though if I did have kinnect, I would probably buy a game or two for it.

new one will be worth it since xbox will be around for at least another 4 years or so. It all depends on how much you want to spend. I bought mine at launch and the dvd drive is about dead on it. I am going to buy a new one when it finally dies.

I'd say get it repaired... once they repair it it won't red ring again.

And it seems pointless buying a new xbox as long as you have everything you want already.

I love Xbox. Which is going to sound conflicting to what I'm about to say.

First off, out of the current Gen of consoles I've easily plugged more time into the 360 than anything else. I only had a 360 for about 3 years. In those 2 years I went through 3 xbox's. RRoD.
So I bought a PS3 around December of this year. Which was quite fortunate considering my elite RRoD'd about a month after. So what I'm going to say is, I'd get a PS3 in all honesty. I'm considering just not buying another 360. They've had money for 4 different Xbox's in that time and you can say what you like about sending it back because of warrenty but they just break 6 months later. I love their service. I love their console. But holy damn is it put together like a house of cards. Their new console apparenly still suffers from the same problem. Only now its a blinking eye not 3 red lights.
Blinking Eye Of Death anyone?? I called it!

I'd say get the new Xbox, it has to be better than the other 360's or so one would think

Buy a PS3

I would say get it fixed, it'll probably take a few weeks but it'll be cheaper, and less likely to rrod in the future.

Don't get a PS3. This isn't a hate speech for PS3's, but it's a waste. You've got all these 360 games and all this data for your 360 that starting over at this point isn't a good idea. I say just get the new slim. It's only $300, and you'll get $50 for trading in your old one, plus it has a huge Hard Drive, and is probably the best choice for you.

Buy a new Arcade for $150. Keep your hard drive, get it with the old extended 3 year warranty and less serious disc scratching issue.

New one would be worth it if you really want WiFi and Kinect when it comes out, otherwise I'd take the longer warranty on the old Xboxes.

If it is still under warranty then they should fix it for free. If not then i say just get a new one.

And you get that idea from...? Trust me it will break again after they have repaired it. It WILL die again.
$80 to repair it? Don't bother, you realize if it's the RRoD you can simply open it up (it's out of warranty so you're not voiding anything) and just re-solder the connection. If you don't feel comfortable doing that take it to a friend who can or a guy who charges $20. Do not pay $80 for something it's costs them $2 to do.

What would I do? Just buy a new console. The new ones are great. Quieter, sleeker, built in wi-fi is good if you only had an elite it also has a nice bigger HDD. In fact the only flaw I find with the new consoles is a lack of MU port - of course what is the point of an MU when you can use a USB now? Well Microsoft I paid good money for that shit back when you couldn't use a USB and now you tell me it's useless?

Sell it and trade in all your games and get a PS3. I know you may lose a bit of cash compared to what you paid initially but in the long run it will be worth it.
I done exactly that when I got the rrod on my 360 and I have never regretted it and have really enjoyed my PS3 for 2 years now without any problems what so ever.

Seriously though, you don't have to pay for a replacement 360 if it RRoD's on you. They not only fix it; they give you a brand new one. If you've had it for over 3 years, it could be a problem, and yet my mates RRoD in june after he'd had it for over three years and they still replaced it for free.
I'm not even in a America here; I'm in the UK, and I know that it got sent off to Germany to be fixed, which, I guess, means that you can send off for a new one in all of Europe.

Back on topic:
If you've had a 360 for a while, it probably isn't worth losing the massive amount of stats and dlcs you've clocked up for a PS3, especially considering you probably won't get a very good deal for the 360 games you sell.

This.

This is actually what I did when my 360 broke.

I never said it wouldn't die.

I said it wouldn't red ring, once they've repaired a red ring, unless they did a really bad job of it the console won't red ring again. Same with E74.

It can die from other means though. I never said it couldn't.
