1. How old is your PC?
2. Buy some cable ties. Open your PC and clean the dust out from your hard drive and CD drive. Make sure that all the cables inside the case are tied into neat bunches to avoid constraining airflow.
3. If you open bios (hammer F5 as your PC is booting, I think) and poke around, there will be an option for which drives you use when starting up your PC, or at least which order to use them in. The three in question are Hard Disk, CD Drive and Floppy. Fiddle around with the settings and you might be able to use process of elimination to figure out which one is causing the problem.

Woah, woah, Schmoopy.

He can just turn off the Autorun.
Lets not go fucking crazy here.
Sorry to say this but...DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS GUY!
Don't go into your bios and tinker with the settings!
Don't Open your disk drive!
and for the love of God! Don't open your hard drive!

Ps. Not every motherboard uses f5 to get into the Bios. In fact majority of companies use differant hotkeys to get into it.

I find it's usually delete.

ok depending on the noise, as there can be few causes of the noise.

first off it could easily be one of the fans, typically it's because dust is stuck in it, this is a loud whirring noise. fix replace the fan

second it could be the hard drive. this will sound like a crunching type noise. fix replace the drive

third is the rom drive. fix remove the disc from the computer

fourth a combo of the above mentioned ones

Get a Mac Mini, it is so damn quiet you barely know it is on.

It is a mystery to me why PCs blather on about multimedia and gaming superiority and then you can't actually hear them over the noisy fan.
I agree with this, bought a Macbook a month ago, and it hasn't made a sound since.
Because that is totally an acceptable solution.
"OH MY GOD YOU HAVE A PAPERCUT, BETTER AMPUTATE YOUR ARM"
This is what you are doing.
That is you. Do you see how silly you sound?
Ridiculous.
You've completely over-exaggerated what I've said. I was simply saying that Macs do not make very much noise when they are running. It was only a comment on computers in general.

What I did not say (and this is what you think I have said) was: "Throw out your PC!!! Sell it for scrap!!! BUY A MAC !!!!

So sorry if your irritated, but read posts properly before you comment on them.
Actually it was to the first poster, not so much you

Yes, my PC is making 200 decibels. I must use a special headset or I'll go deaf.

You do realise there are laptops I can use, too? And they are quiet AND can play games.

Woah, woah, Schmoopy.

He can just turn off the Autorun.
The vibrations created from 200 decibels would disconnect your brain from your spinal cord. Yay for useless facts!
Not to mention that it's equivalent to 251188644 F-16's flying overhead. Go logaritmical (sp?) formulae.

Sounds to me like one of your case or hardware fans is on its way to the big pc hardware recycler in the sky. Try replacing your cpu cooler with a 3rd party one (zalman and thermaltake are my favourites, but others may have different suggestions).

Also, not to nit pick too much, but you mean AN oh-so-loud pc. Proper use of the language is actually important, despite what the majority of 12 - 18 year olds seem to believe.

I highly doubt this is the right place to post this, but any other message boards are usually filled to the brim with idiots.
Simply put, my PC is too loud when it boots. It just started today. When I turn it on, it's horribly loud, whereas 3-4 hours ago it was anice and quiet booter. After Windows loads completely, the fans (which I suppose are making the noise) finally quiet down. I downloaded SpeedFan, but even setting the fan speed to 100% doesn't make half the noise the PC makes when it boots.
Please, Escapists, can you help me out?
Oh, and I'm running on Windows XP SP2
It could be something as simple as having a disc in the optical drive during boot. Discs often run when you start the computer. This is more likely to sound like a fan than the hard drive.

Other than that, you could get some rubber grommets for your hard drives and optical drives and/or get some sound dampening pads for your case.

I have an old Dell that does the same thing. It has a bad fan that doesn't like to be ramped up because it has a bad bearing and needs time to warm up... which is more hilarious because I haven't formatted it in 3 years and it takes at least 10 minutes to start up.

There could of been a 360 turned on 3 houses over. Maybe he just heard that? :p

Yeah, might as well replace it with a cardboard cutout then. It's just as good and much cheaper and less pretentious.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh....

...Anyway... As previously said, it's most likely either the CD/DVD drive or the fans, take out the CD/DVD you might have in them and clean out your computer, that should clear that right up.

Calm down. It won't break your PC (unless you smash the hard drive or something). And I did make it clear I wasn't sure if F5 opened BIOS. The OP fixed his problem anyway.

And I think he has enough brains to decide whether he wants to follow my advice (which I admit might be a bit daunting to people who aren't familiar with BIOS and all that) without you jumping in to save him like some kind of Cyber-Lancelot.
