So just yesterday I got a new computer and Portal to go with it. I was playing and everything was fine until all of the sudden I would hear a beeping noise and the game would get choppy every time I pressed a button on my keyboard.

I tried muting the system sounds. And that got rid of the noise but not the choppyness. It doesn't happen all the time, just randomly it seems. But whenever it does the only way to get rid of it is to exit the game and then start it up again.

Can anybody help?

Could you post the Specs for your computer please?

My first thought would be something to do with the Audio hardware, so your audio drivers may need updating. So if you have an Sound Card, go to the manufactures website and grab the latest Audio driver there. If you are using the audio from the Motherboard, go to the Motherboard's manufacture's website and they should have a Driver on that page for the Audio.

Other than that I would need to see some specs for your machine to be anymore help.

I'm a complete idiot when it comes to computers. So pretty much everything you said made little sense to me.

This is what I have http://ca.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=hUn2kMS4sU3z3kUV It's specs are there. Hopefully that'll tell you something.

Okay sorry about that, I found the drivers you need (drivers are software that allows the hardware to work with your computer).

So go to the asus support page for your model found here : http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?model=N71Jq&os=29&SLanguage=en-us

Go down to Audio (1) and download the file given and install. Restart your computer and this, hopefully will fix your problem.

Well I don't know if it fixed the problem yet. But it created a new one. Now sound won't go through my headphones, only the speakers.

EDIT: Fixed the headphone issue. Going to test the other one now.

Weird, this may be a small problem or a large one (I'm hoping small).

The first thing to do is go into the Control Panel, then click on 'Hardware and Sound', then click on 'Sound'. You will then be presented with all your playback options, in this case Speakers and Headphones (make sure your headphones are plugged in), if this is correct then the problem is that the speakers Speakers are set at default (meaning it will always automatically use the speakers).

If this is the case then right-click on the headphone icon and select 'Set as Default'. However if you do not see Headphones there, then something is wrong with the driver and we will have to find the correct one.

Sounds like your mashing your keyboard and launching something in the background.
Pretty sure that's not the case. When I shut the game down nothing new has come up. When I relaunch it works fine. And it did happen once yesterday while I was playing Dear Esther. A game in which I only had to press w.

I haven't had a problem yet since taking Killermud's advice, but since it happens seemingly at random that may just be luck.
