So I played through Crysis for the umpteenth time the other day (on the lowest settings, natch), and during the final battle, things got clusterfucky as ever (from a graphics/performance standpoint). The game runs pretty well on my current setup, but this recent play-through got me wondering was wondering just how good my video card is. I've got an NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT (and a 2.3 GHz AMD Phenom 8650 Triple Core processor, if that's pertinent); is that fairly middle-of-the-road, or is it pretty out of date by now? And is the processor the bigger culprit here?

I quickly checked some tests and graphic card looks pretty low.
Processor doesnt look really bad.
Im not really an expert in this so my opinion doesnt mean much. I just checked tests which who knows how old are.

I have a Geforce 6150. Completly useless but i cant aford a new one. I would sorta...um... LOVE...to have the card.

Edit: Also, it depends on what you want to play. For example if you just play some counter-strike, you dont need much, but if you want to play crysis for example you need alot.

That is very out of date. Don't bother buying any nvidia cards below a 9600GT...they are just budget cards and they aren't made for gaming. The only rule used to be x600 and above were the gaming/enthusiast cards. Now it's kinda the x50's and above, such as the GTS 250.

I recommend a new card.

It's out of date. VERY much so.

Nothing below 200 GTX series is acceptable anymore.

It's an okay card, but you should consider upgrading it when have the funds. I say at least a 260 or 270 if you're going with Nvidia.

Yeah 9400 is the bottleneck,I think 260's are cheap now, and my two handle it without any problems at very high settings, so one should cover it pretty easy.

Processor sounds pretty damn good.

Graphics card is a bit dated but fine.

Graphics cards are normally outdated within days of release anyway.

Your cpu is WAY OLD you needs an upgrade.
go with either intel(socket 1156) or Amd(socket AM2+/AM3) any cpu/motherboard in those 2 sockets would be adequate.
As for your gpu you should go with either a Nvidia GTX 4xx, or Ati Radeon hd 5xxx series cards.
Nvidia GTX 460 ($199 us)
Ati Radeon hd 5770($150 us)
I wouldnt go cheaper then the selected.

I thought Crysis needed 3ghz, but maybe that is just single cores. Look around at GPUs the Radeon 5850 is apparently the best value for money at the moment. The new gen Nvidia just don't seem cost effective to me but the high end stuff seems comparable to ATI. If I were you, depending on your motherboard of course, I'd buy a new a new card and a CPU cooler. Swap your card, and overclock your CPU, you should get 2.8ghz easy and 3ghz is possible with a decent cooler. Then start saving for a new mobo, ddr3 ram (if you still have ddr2) and a new cpu. I wouldn't say to buy either of the two manufacturers, just look to see which is offering the best value at the moment.

FYI when running games at low settings you tend to bottleneck the cpu and at high settings the gpu.

This is what I'm using currently and it blazes through Crysis no problems. The bang for you buck on this card is fantastic, but I'd recommend stepping up to a factory O/C version like the 5850 XFX Black Edition for that little extra juice.

My 8800GT is still kicking along just fine. I can play Crysis on high DX10 at 1920x1080 and still get 30FPS.

With AA and AF?

And try Just Cause 2... computer suicide does, in fact, happen.

AF but no AA. I got an overclocked one with more memory than standard though.

Why do I really doubt that? Because a 8800GT will not run Crysis on high at that res and still get 30 fps. maybe staring at a wall or something, but not in an intense firefight.

My e8400 oced to 3.5 ghz + hd 4870 can get to around 37 fps outdoors at that res on high, and in the last boss battle, I was barely mustering 23 fps.

Have you even used fraps to check?

I concur, I have an e8500 @ 3.8Ghz and an HD 4890 and I have similar frame rates. My local store was out of stock of e8400s and 4870s when I bought mine funnily enough. Its the lowest frame rate that is the most important one, and that is part of the reason I don't like crossfire or Sli.

Heh heh, get a smaller monitor? I hope you do some video editing or complex CAD to justify that monster.

No, but I needed an upgrade at the time and though I might as well go all out.
