I realize that the fun associated with the franchise is from playing the specific role of Link, the destined Hero. But, I always loved the land of Hyrule, and felt it could do with some more in-depth exploration. The franchise as-is is not exactly suited for this (unless we get some sort of Metroid Prime/Legend of Zelda hyrbrid) so I've always harbored a secret dream to see a Legend of Zelda RPG (To make sense it'd need a better name with connections to the source material like The Kingdom of Hyrule, or Hylian Conquest, or Battle for The Sacred Realm).

Now that we have an established timeline http://static02.mediaite.com/geekosystem/uploads/2011/12/ztime.jpg

I think it could be done. The world could take the "Hero Failed" route and maybe 50 years after Adventure of Link the Kingdom of Hyrule comes under attack from reawakened monsters. Lizalfos, Stalfos, Moblins, etc run rampant and decimate the army. The King calls what's left of the army back to the city of Hyrule to protect it, leaving the citizens of outlying towns and villages doomed. You are an adventurer, called upon by the Kingdom to protect its citizens. For your service, you will be rewarded. You can quest, slay monsters, and do other RPG shit like fetch Cuccos and milk cows at Lon Lon Ranch. Since many citizens feel abandoned by their King there are many factions to join like the Goron Stronghold of Death Mountain (they took in many people when the army up left them for dead), the Zora Sanctuary of Lake Hylia (The Zora's are powerful warriors who fight for those who cannot), the Thieves of Gerudo Valley (who have always considered themselves something of outsiders), or even the Army itself and attempt to bring some honor back to a dishonored Kingdom.

Do you think it's a good idea?
Do you think anything like this will get made?

I like my idea, but I doubt it'll ever happen.

Captcha: that's what she said ... awesome.

I just want to throw this terrible idea out there.
Based off Majora's mask it's the apocalypse, entire game resets every 72 hours. You lose everything except your levels (extremely hard to level up, levels give 1 stat bonus either HP, ATK, DEF, ETC.) BEST END GAME CONTENT EVER!

Or we could just have it like a normal zelda game but open world (to a degree) and has multiple side-quests alongside the big one that you will follow till the end game.

Yeah, I've always like the Zelda Universe as a setting for an RPG. I've always liked the idea of setting it just before A Link to the Past and having the player as one of the many people who quested for the Sacred Realm. There's just enough blank canvas during the Imprisoning War for a relatively unknown player character to fit neatly into the story.

You have the entire build up to the war itself, starting the player off as either a blank slate or an existing lore based template such as a villager from Kakariko, Knight of Hyrule, one of Blind's thieves etc. There's a ton of opportunity for side quests throughout the story leading up to Ganon's invasion of Hyrule. Whether you pursue the Golden Power for wealth and power, to stop others from taking it and using it or whether you really just don't care; the end result will be slightly different depending on the journey you took.

I even had a really neat idea for a companion system where their loyalty and alignment will reflect on you when you finally enter the Dark World, with the disloyal and greedy defecting and becoming mini-bosses later on during the final sealing of Ganon. Also I think it'd be interesting to see your characters alignment only reflected in the Dark World, with the arbitrary points that make it up being completely invisible otherwise.
