A Pokemon MMO; a way to solve all of the series's problems.

I have a few grievances with the Pokemon series:

1. Having japan get the games a full year or so before the US. Why? don't the Japanese versions have an English language setting anyways? Translating does not take that long, even if it does not.

2. Having event Pokemon be only in X country or location, self explanatory.

3. Not letting us import our save from the previous game all the damn time.

We beat the elite four and became the champion, again.

I'm tired of it, at least give us the excuse that you can't have Pokemon go between regions, and have use be the SAME guy as the last game!

You know what would solve these in one fell swoop? an MMO.

It'd solve every damned problem, the series already has MMO like gameplay and world setup, so why not?

It'd be PERFECT!

Thoughts?

too much money. Why do that when they can just say "Oh look we added 25 more pokemon to the new black death version! :D" and everyone eats it up like it's porn.

How can they milk you dry with an MMO? It's not as easy.

its probably THE series that could benefit most from having an MMO under its belt -- the graphics aren't exactly demanding, so lots of people can play at the same time, battles vs real people is, for me at least, what I've always wanted in pokemon; admittedly you can get it, but never particularly good battles.

People are so desperate for a Pokemon MMO they tried making their own. It was shockingly coded and got taken down by Nintendo in less than a year.

Well, to be honest, a good Pokémon MMO would make my pants drop to the floor so hard that I'd need a large team of contracters to fix the house afterwards, which is a good thing.

However, they'd need to adjust the combat a wee bit. Do you take the role of the individual pokémon in battle? Are you only the trainer issuing commands? Still turnbased?

And other aspects; Endgame content for instance, just the Elite Four? Pokémon League? Legendary Pokémon? Should you be able to catch said pokémon? That would certainly lead to a potentially broken gaming experience.

Level up system? What perks would be attained when levelling up besides new moves? How would they balance x amounts of pokémon? Quests?

There are many aspects that need to fit with the Pokémon universe, but I would like nothing more to see a well done MMO with Pokémon. There have been a few tries to incorporate multiplayer into the standard games, but it hasn't worked at all.

MMO with micro-transactions would be an insane way for Nintendo to make money. Legendary Pokemon cost $4.99 and $0.99 to revive. $0.49 rides on the St. Anne or you can walk, but it takes forever. Or buy tickets in bulk for $4.99 for 12.

Not to mention every item ever would be on sale. Want a Poke Ball? Use in game money. Want a Great Ball? Use in game money or $0.10 each. Want an Ultra Ball? Lots of in game money or $0.25 each.

1: Good question, I was thinkint just a 3d version of the gameboy/ds games, with just more open enoviements and such.

2: it's an MMO, the game would be updated with new content and stuff, a new generation would come out every so often.

3: see my answer to 1.

This has been proposed before. Nintendo does not want to fix the series. Why do the games on a DS still only have one save slot? Why do versions still exist when the data can easily be fit on a single cartridge.

Nintendo is perfectly happy with the money printing formula they have.

I would go back to Pokemon if they made an MMO and last time I played there were only 250 Pokemon

Pokemon is one of those series I liked when I first played it but after I stopped and think about it long enough, I just couldn't play it anymore. Basically, when you make the mental connection between Pokemon battles and cock fights....yeah...

But you want to know what I would like to see? An MMO based on the Mystery Dungeon series. No, really. Why play as just a human pulling the strings when you can play *as* your favorite types and such? Granted, such an effort would need a lot of reworking but hey, I would give it a shot. I haven't played a Pokemon game since old Red and Blue but Mystery Dungeon got me back in.

If a game had multiple save slots, it'd be easier to cheat. (for example, using two DS's to trade back and forth legendary and starter pokemon to cheat in another save file)

To influence trading with other people. It gave a real challenge to "catch 'em all!" before the GTS came about in Diamond and Pearl.

To a degree this is true, but you're thinking of those that grew up with the RED BLUE and YELLOW versions, who've seen all the problems appear again and again over 15 years. However, does anyone remember Pokemon Coliseum? Yes, there were a ton of issues with that game, but if Pokemon went MMO, that'd be how I'd like it to play out. The 3ds is coming, so why not experiment?

1. Can you stop listing stuff?

Anyways, I think your right pokemon mmo done right would be awesome. One thing they should fix though that I've always hated about the game series is only being allowed one save. What the hell is up with that? Back on the gameboy color I could understand but even then Zelda had more than one save spot.

My sister and I have been asking ourselves this for years now.

While she's perfectly happy with Nintendo these days, I can't fucking stand how they operate their stuff anymore. And it makes my head hurt that people just keep eating it up.

An MMO is a step in the right direction. If ANY IP was right for the gameplay style, it's Pokemon.

And don't tell me it's too expensive. Fuck you. With all the money Pokemon, nonetheless NINTENDO has up it's sleeve, I can tell you the real reason why it's not being made. Nintendo has gotten fat and lazy...

1. To easy. Why then would you buy the game and possibly pay subscription fees for only a slightly enhanced version of the already existing game? Interaction? You already have that through linked battles and trading.

2. Simply adding features sounds good enough, but what I'm more concerned with is what they should add. As of endgame content I can't see many possibilities.

3. Still applies. Just because it's an MMO doesn't magically solve everything, that's naïve. Yes, I realize they buy themselves time with, say, only having Kanto to begin with and adding other regions in later expansions, but it still needs a lot of thinking.

What an MMO needs is content. Now, Pokémon as a series focuses around battling and catching pokémon. That would logically be the center which the rest of the game rotates around. However, it would need more than that to be successful in today's market which is dominated by World of Warcraft. It would need lore, structure, motivations, alternate excercises like, for instance, professions and managable solutions concerning gameplay.

What I'm aiming at is that it can't just be battling/catching all the time. It needs a world where things are happening, and things have happened. If they manage that, I'm sure a lot of people would play it.
