A problem I've only ever had with Sony

I've been gaming since before I could talk properly. Once I started reading, I got into RPGs. I would play all sorts on the Super Nintendo, NES, Gameboy, etc. I've known since the early days of Mystic Quest how important it is to be able to save your game.

When the Playstation was upon us, I quickly found out that in-game memory storage was no longer an option. So, after restarting Metal Gear Solid and, Final Fantasy VIII (got the the PS party late) for the 10th time, I finally was able to find a cheaper memory card so I could save that data and get through those games.

The problem I've been having with that external memory though is how sensitive it is. Playing on the Playstation, I would have to re-format that stupid card over and over. This is before I knew how to back up my data of course. The Nintendo 64 had a memory...thing too but that seemed to be more sturdy than the PS-memory card.

The Playstation 2 was released and I chose to skip it in favor of the waiting game (I liked the Xbox and was willing to wait) I did eventually get a PS2 but the problem there was how sensitive those are in general. Granted, I did get a used one. It would only play Final Fantasy IX. My brother got a brand new slim recently and it won't play many games at all either but, it plays enough games to not need to be replaced.

Most recently though, while playing Persona 3 on my PSP, the thing stopped reading the memory stick. I put it into my computer where it says the thing needs to be formatted. I click on the confirmation button only to get the prompt that there is no memory stick in the port. I tried putting it back into the PSP where it is completely unnoticed by the hardware. There goes the data of about 6 games...

---------

Anyway: anybody else experience problems like this with third-party accessories/ add-ons? Memory cards are the only things giving me problems. Hell, I just unearthed a Xbox dance pad which I've used the HELL out of and it's still working wonderfully

The hell are you doing, hitting your memory cards with a hammer? I've never had that problem ever before. Maybe you simply aren't being careful enough with your electronics? I've never once had any issues with memory with anything Playstation and I'm always careful with all of my electronics.

I've had a few issues with Gamecube 3rd party memory, but the stuff made by Nintendo is great.

Under a similar light, the only problems I've had with Sony is a lot of PS1 and PS2 games really gave me headaches whenever I would play them, and I don't know why. It only happened with the playstations, never anything else. So I never bought a sony console.

There is no excuse not to have built-in memory for consoles or handhelds. PS3 and 360 did away with that nuisance, but it still remains for handhelds. I don't really care about handhelds, but to me, it's pretty obvious it's just a money grab.

Micro-sized storage is pretty efficient right now, so it's not a size constraint. I'm not sure what power is required to keep a drive active on a handheld, and if it chews into the battery, if at all. However, I think they just do it to make you buy yet another thing you shouldn't need in the first place.

I don't know very many people that swap saves. Memory cards should be an accessory, not a necessity, this is 2010 after all.

I also had problems with memory cards back in the day. My PS1 caught a virus or something, or something got shorted and I couldn't use memory cards at all. Was stuck playing all the oldies-but-goldies without saves. In some respects, it was funner. However, games are considerably longer these days, and it would not be fun, whatsover, to not be able to save, or to have a sensitive system.

Not really. My only two consoles are Sony and they seem to perform rather fine; magnificent machines.

Well then, you've either got horrid luck, or you leave things in your pockets/backpack/whatever you use to carry things unprotected.

I have never had an issue with memory cards. Ever. And my playstation/ps2 along with memory cards are years old.

Maybe it's just you.

My only problem with Sony is that every thing I've bought from them has stopped reading discs shortly after I've gotten it. Bought a PS2, drive started giving read errors after a few months. Bought a PSP, drive started giving read errors after a few months. So I don't buy anything from Sony any more.

My personal diagnosis is that it recognized that I'm a PC Gamer and did this in an act of spite :p

I've never had a problem with official Sony memory cards for PS1 or PS2, although larger than 8MB cards do give me hassles.

I bought a £5 Memory Card for the PS1 when it went down to about £100 (classic chunky one) which was about the time FFVIII came out.

Still works today.

I recall getting a Memory card for £20 on the PS2 where you had to put the disc in first in order to get it to work.

And then it wouldn't even work for GTA 3.

Needless to say it went straight back to Game.

The only memory card related issue i had with the PS2 was turning it off while it was saving, and that only damaged the game file that i was playing (NFS:MW).

But that was my fault for being an idiot and turning it off.

This really surprised me actually. I'm not trying to be a dick, but you have to be doing something really obviously wrong for the console if your PS2 doesn't work. Idunno about the slims but the original PS2 is fat for a reason. It's the most durable system I've ever owned

Then again, maybe you just have bad luck with this sorta thing

My problem with Sony is that I don't like their control sticks, they seem too fragile to me. Also, every DRM they've ever created is crap. (Spyware on your CDs, anyone?)

Ah, the memory card, so many good memories. I've never had any problems with my memory cards since the PS1 days, though to be fair I only really started my gaming days on the PS2. That's where I leared the importance of sacrifice, I.E. having to delete one game in order ot make room for another. Oh, how I love to delete a game I haven't played in months to pave way for the birth of a new one.

*sigh* Good times...

But yeah, I guess it's just a string of bad luck for you. I've never had any problems with memory cards as my previous fantasies mentioned.
