Hi, my PS3 recently died. So, we got a new PS3 slim. Of course, this leaves me without any of my save data. I've arranged with my brother's friend to use my old harddrive in his PS3 to do a data transfer. But, his PS3 isn't taking it, and is saying that it needs an update and a harddrive reformat. I'm now frightened that I'll lose all my data. What should I do?

Have a bit of a weep and replay all your games? The latter part should be easy; we all know the PS3 has no games.

In fairness this is probably the sort of thing you should take to a technical forum.

I had this problem when I got my MW2 250Gb 360. Meh. I just sucked it up and played my games again. If it's not worth a second runthrough, it's not worth buying, imo.

(At least my new 360 actually worked, heh.)

Tried looking in the system settings yet?

Click on 'System Settings' 'Transfer Utility' and it should run you through it step by step.

EDIT: I just USBed everything over myself.

PS3 formats any new HDD you insert into it. wether that be a brand new one OR one from another console. Lost your games buddy. You PSN account is stored on the network itself though so all your DLC, Trophies & the like will be saved on there

EDIT: Updated info after some googling!

The PS3 locks the HDD to one machine, so any PS3 that isn't your old (dead) one will ask to reformat it before it read from it. So, if the problem with your old PS3 was the laser (or some other component that doesn't stop the PS3 from turning on), then the you can just use your old PS3 to back up all the saved files onto a USB stick and plug that into the Slim.

If there's nothing you can do, at least you get to keep your trophies :)
