A question about Alpha Protocol...

I just realized that Alpha Protocol comes out next week, and my initial response was, "hey, cool, I like Mass Effect and I like the Jason Bourne movies, so this ought to work out okay." So I watched some gameplay videos in which I spotted screen tearing--like, lots of it--and then I noticed that this game is made by Obsidian. I think the only other Obsidian game I've played was KotOR 2, which was based on a Bioware game, and which was a glitchy piece of shit. And just now, I read a preview on IGN which suggested that this game, which closely resembles a Bioware game, may be a glitchy piece of shit, so yeah, am having deja vu-related second thoughts here.

Has anybody else heard anything about this?

No i have not, but I'm not gonna take my time and look around. I saw it and i looked interested so I'm going to wait until it comes out and i will buy it to try it out. I don't want my mind tainted by biased idiots.

Well to be honest I wouldn't call KotOR 2 a "glitchy piece of shit", but Obsidian tends to have a few bugs here and there. Obsidian is a good developer and personally I think the game looks great and I will be picking it up day one. Will it be buggy? Maybe, I hope not. We'll just have to wait and see, though if I were you I wouldn't worry too much simply 'cause it's Obsidian. They know what they're doing.

I've read a bit about this too but then again most of the places have also said what they played was still not 100% finished so I'll wait and see. Also I played KotR 2 and the bugs were not that big a problem for me in the overall scheme of things.

well, as long as they had time to work out the bugs for this game it should be fine. Obsidian was only glitchy because Lucasarts demanded the game be released by the holiday season.

I havent heard anything about this game though

I'm thinking those videos were pretty old, as it got delayed in order to address issues such as the ones you stated.

Screen Tearing isn't really that big of an issue anyway, and there are bound to be some other glitches, it appears to be a fairly large world to roam around in.

Okay, but Obsidian made Neverwinter Nights 2 as well, and I'm told that that game was pretty glitchy too. (So now I'm wondering how many glitchy games this company has to come up with before it finally decides to hire some competent programmers...)

It's not so much hate as it is disapointment. Obsidian has a good track record for ideas, but a poor record for implementing them and even worse one for finishing their games and polishing them. NWN2 was glitchy and KotOR2 was missing a huge chunk of content. If Obsidian were to bring their craftsmanship to the same level as their concepts, they'd be an awesome developer. We can only hope that this is the game where they get their act straight and actually finish what they started...

I'm torn here the story and dialouge system looks good but I'm not too impressed with the gameplay, and while I like Obsidian more than the OP the do tend to ride on Bioware's success. On the other hand though working under Bioware for so long they are bound to have learned something and they make a lot of RPGs so the GT review will be a big factor for me. Obsidian isn't bad by any circumstance though maybe unpolished but not bad.

Eurogamer said they had a review embargo until the afternoon of the day it comes out. That can't be a good sign.

Oh, good, there goes another chunk of my confidence in this game. It's usually an indication of shittiness when movies do that, so...

I looked at the back of the pre-order box and the graphics did not bode well. They are not terrible but considering how polished other Bioware games look.... I'm waiting for a full selection of reviews on this one.

Me too, I like the idea and could probably ignore the graphics if it is well written and executed, I somehow suspect it won't be though.

My copy will be arriving tomorrow (I live in the UK. For some reason, we've been getting a whole bunch of stuff earlier than the yanks recently).

I have high hopes. There are two reviews out, to my knowledge. One gives 84%, the other gives 5/10. So it's all up in the air at the moment.

And? Obsidian aren't BioWare.

I'm looking forward to it, although I'm not getting it just yet. Alpha Protocol is the first time Obsidian have worked on an original property, so it'd be interesting to see what they do. Plus they're not using a bug-tastic BioWare engine this time (or using one as a basis), going for Unreal 3 this time.

Should be good.
