Have you ever found yourself interested in the lore and expanded universe of something, but not the actual media it is based on?

I bring this up, because a few days ago I was with a friend and he asked me if I wanted to play Warhammer 40K. This got me thinking, that although I enjoy playing all the video games and reading the stories based on Warhammer, I can't actually get into the figure based game itself. This seems odd to me, but I do enjoy the lore of Warhammer; it's fairly unique and The Eisenhorn Trilogy is one of the greatest examples of an expanded universe.

Has something similar ever happened to you?

Well, yes - the exact same thing, in fact. I don't mind wargames but I really don't feel any interest twoards them, And yet, I really like WH40K. But maybe that's not a good example, because there is more than just a wargame - there are books, RPGs, video games, all of which can now be considered part of the medium.

And I'll just throw a couple of examples to show you that you'll never be alone in this: Harry Potter fans, who don't/haven't read the books and Twilight fans who do the same. I now realise that was overly negative, so let me add the Star Wars fans who haven't seen the movies.

I actually quite like the lore that surrounds World of Warcraft - I think it's pretty well-designed and written, and is fairly expansive so there's plenty to see, but I've never been a great fan of the game.

However, most expanded universes I get involved in - that is, Star Wars and the Warhammer ones - I actually like the source material as well.

Yeah, these days I'm more interested in the backstory/extended universe of WH40K than the tabletop game itself (no time, no money etc.).

But that's pretty much the only XU that I'm into really...

Star Wars doesn't really amuse me as it once did, never been that into WHF and I haven't really had that many proper encounters with others, so... curse my blessed ignorance, eh...

I found the with Star Wars. The movies are good but not great. I love the games jedi Knight series, KOTOR series. Even down to Rogue Squadron, Episode I: Racer, etc. I read the books and wookieepedia random things some days. The games got me into the expanded universes not the movies.
