when critiquing a game would you focus on your experiences as a player or the experiences the mechanics facilitate for the player.

A little bit of both, but mainly on the mechanics themselves & how they work with the player. It's important for someone to know whether the mechanics work for them in a good way or just seem designed to put controllers in drywall.

Focus on the mechanics, then point out your findings with examples from your experiences as a player. I'd think.

Also, mood, tone, athmosphere etc. are very subjective anyway, you'll probably have nothing besides your personal experiences to focus on there...

Only guesses, tho, since I'm not a game critic.

A little of both. It is useful to be able to identify and pick apart what specifically the game is trying to do and what experience it's trying to give, and compare it to the experience you are getting. If you're looking to go into game critique, I recommend taking a few classes in which critique of other's work is required, like upper level art or writing classes. Or specifically a film critique class if you can get ahold of one.
