So I got Minecraft about a month ago and I'm loving it. I just have one question. When you go into the Nether, what is there to DO down there?

The only thing I found was infinite Bloodstone/Netherack and those two mobs (ghasts and zombiepigmen).

I made a cave in the Nether and filled it with 20 TNT and all I found was more Netherack and adamentium.

Is there ANYTHING worth while in the Nether?

I always use the Nether as a fast travel teleportation system.

From the wiki: [http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Nether]

"When re-entering the normal world, any distance covered in The Nether is multiplied by 8, effectively making The Nether a fast travel zone that allows for greater distances to be covered in a short amount of time in the normal world."

I think there are some other useful resources in there, but I usually just use it for convenience.

You can get mushrooms down there, they're pretty nice in a soup I hear.
Other than that though, not much, other than to die over and over from ghasts.

nothing, really. you can mine glowstone, if you're all THAT bothered about it, but you need 9 dust to make 1 block. and the stuff is on stalactites on the ceiling, so it's quite a hassle to get it. other than that there's a ton of ghasts, lava, and pigmen zombies who stand around not doing stuff...
even worse, obsidian, of which you need at least 10 blocks to make the portal, is one of the hardest materials to obtain and it has no use other than making that portal. and there's really no reason to go there, which makes obtaining one of the rarest minerals in the game totally pointless... maybe in updates he'll put in some interesting things in the nether? how about more nether-only stuff that's actually of some practical use?

You can build a doom fortress... IN HELL!

What more do you need?

All kidding aside I like the Nether as a change of scenery, and one day I will build my obsidian tower on the shores of hell itself... but seeing as how I always play on the hard setting the ghasts will make that just a bit challenging.

Oddly enough, aside from the ghasts, which can be avoided if you stay off the surface, the Nether is actually safer than the 'real' world, which seems a little strange. Hopefully Notch will add further hostile mobs (and useful blocks) to it later on.

Obsidian is pretty useful in canons mind you. Although you could use water I suppose.

I can't make it work like that, i tried once, traveled pretty far, made a 2nd gate and used the gate but it just brought me back to my original gate's entrance in the nether, entering that gate brought me back to my original gate in the normal world.

Build your house out of it ... makes it fairly creeper proof

A ton of lava, good long distance transportation, glowstone, soul sand, and lots of mushrooms.

It's a sort of dangerous version of fast-ish travel from portal to portal.

Also, apparently, Notch is gonna make torches temporary light sources that have to be re-lit with flint-n-steel, and will instead make lanturns as a permanent light source, and glowstone will probably be an ingrediant. Also, blocks of glowstone are quite good sources of light for your mountain fortress's ceiling. :)

I'm also kinda hoping he makes obsidian so you can make a sword and tools out of it. That stuff can get SHARP.

Other than that, probably bragging rights. Or to try and take on a Ghast (good fuckin' luck, dude. XD )

I wouldn't reccommend making a house out of netherrack. That stuff's not very tough, and soul sand's largely useless except as a monster-trap.

I haven't been to the Nether yet, but wouldn't you just go out the same way you came in?
Again from the wiki:

"A form of nether portal travel can be extremely useful especially for the use as before said fast travel. However their are certain rules that do apply with this travel and most of them have to do with the location of the new portal created in the normal world. The first portal that gets a player to the nether is the only portal in the normal world that creates a portal in the nether after that all other portals built in the real world will connect with this main portal and this can be used for extremely fast travel back to your original base. Now portals in the nether are different as long as they meet the rules they will connect to the real world. As said before everything in the nether is 1/8th of the normal world using this ratio you can travel very far.'

"The portal must be built outside of sound range of any other portals. If it is within range the portal will then simply connect to the original one in that area. This is not true in older versions of Minecraft but in the newest currently Beta 1.2_02 this is true."

TL;DR: You need to do a little planning. If you just build portals in the nether with no corresponding exit in the real world, it's gonna just take you back to the original portal. You need to link it to one on the outside first. More info on the wiki page on how to do it.

I don't want to pay for this game. If you can't play it for free then I don't want to play it at all.

Fast Travel?
One block in the Nether is 8 in the real world.

Persoanlly though I prefer long and elaborate minecart tracks :)
