So I'm a little confused about the self promoting rule. From what i gathered there is absolutely no problem linking youtube videos. Since people link those all the time. Are we just not allowed to link our own youtube videos? Or are there other types of things that i cannot link?

For example. Say i want to talk about a perticular game. Can i link a video from anyone except my own youtube account?

Like obviously if i link a GamesTheorists video about Earthbound ( for example) it's obviously not mine, that's okay. But if i made a video about earthbound and wanted to talk about the game, i can't? Am i getting this right?

I think the only exception for linking to your own YouTube videos is if you reply to a thread and the video is related to the topic. I've done this twice I think and it appears to be okay.

That being said, I've seen quite a few threads which were about the OP's YouTube video not get the ol' lock and warning. For example, one time someone was asking for advice on how to improve his film-making skills, so he obviously had to show his video.

If you make an actual discussion out of it then it the mods will be lenient, if you make a blatant spam bot attempt your ass goes to the curb.
