I've noticed that every time I record a film on a video camera and go back and watch the video, I notice that my voice sounds a lot different (and a lot more stupid) than when I talk out loud. Then I usually think to my self, "Is this really how my voice sounds to other people? Why didn't someone tell me it sounded so dumb?"

Does anyone else notice this too and think that their voice sounds stupid?

Haha yeah I'd just written about that on the accents post, a little further down. I wouldn't consider myself to have an overly 'posh' accent, but when I hear myself on video I sound unbelievably so. I sometimes wonder whether everyone else hears me similar to the way I do, or more like the video.

I really hope it's not like the videos :[ haha

I think I can explain why.
When you talk, the vibrations of your voice box reaches your ear much faster and without alot of distance to cover. Yet when it is projected into open space to other people, it will sound different.

I do voice overs :( It's not that great because it is hard to order stuff at restaurants - I tend to go to the same ones over and over because the food is ok and the staff get to know me, so the "magic" or whatever it is wears off.

I sound a lot deeper on video/tape than I do when I hear myself normally, probably something to do with voicebox vibrations.

I absolutely hate my projected voice (I have no idea if that's the proper term or not). It makes sound like a total geek/nerd/dork (I realize that it fits me, but I still don't like it).

I have noticed how completely different I sound when I'm recorded compared to what I sound like to myself when I talk. I am fortunate in that both me and other people like how I sound when recorded. Almost everyone sounds different on tape, it's not just you ;)

If you are unhappy with your recorded voice you can try to change it. Listen to it and identify what you don't like - such as pitch, intonation etc. It would also be good to have a close friend listen to it and tell you honestly if you really sound as bad as you think you do. You probably don't and you may be surprised to find other people like how you sound. A friend will also be able to give you honest feed back if they think you can do better.

Once you identify what you want to change record yourself while trying different techniques. More likely then not you'll stumble onto something that you like. Don't be too hard on yourself - often we are more critical of ourselves then others and what we think is a glaringly obvious flaw doesn't even appear as such to others.
