All right so basically on these forums for a while (without an account) just watching videos and skimming through forums. Anyway one of my favorite videos has been Zero Punctuation, and the most obvious thing Ive noticed is his hate of JRPGs. and on the forums Ive noticed a hate of JRPGs as well, also excessive quoting of ZP, excessive amount of profile pictures being from ZP, and excessive amount of hate to games which ZP has badly reviewed.

so I'm putting this question to you escapists, is this just a anti JRPG forum or is the hate directed to them to do with ZP?

Probably both.

By this point, I don't care. People mock and laugh "skinny, pointy-haired androgynous boys fighting Satan?" Meh, too busy playing Tales of Symphonia to notice.

I was always under the impression that there was more love for JRPGs here than hatred. I've also noticed that people with ZP avatars generally have a low post count. Most people who've been here for any significant amount of time realize that Yahtzee is a comedian more than a legitimate game reviewer, and treat his opinions on games as such.

It's just another case of the vocal minority. Most of the people who talk about JRPG use overused and often untrue cliches.

Can't say I've really noticed. Then again, I'm not noted for being terribly observant.

I haven't noticed any anti-JRPG talk outside of ZP. Personally I don't care for them, but I never really have. I just don't like the gameplay and the way the characters are generally written.

I've never noticed. I'm an avid lover of good JRPG's. Of course, there can be crappy ones, just like crappy shooters, platformers, etc. It's all just a matter of personal taste.

i basically treat his reviews as a raw indication of how a game can be viewed if you look really hard at all the parts you don't like that much.

i like em and they're the reason i first came to the escapist, when he rages about something i go "meh, that might be a nice game when the price is lowered..."

JRPG's? don't see that much hate, not much love either though.
not my kind of games, played some and they weren't that bad.

It's only cause the only people who state their opinion are the people who hate them and/or are too big of a ZP follower(don't get me wrong though I love ZP.) Those of us who like them don't bother mentioning it cause we don't care and just enjoy them.

Most of the people here came to this site originally for ZP...so sure, many people are going to be swayed by his opinions. Personally JRPG's aren't my fancy, but I don't hate on them. Though in terms of ZP, he at least makes good arguments for why they aren't the best, while most of the forums hating doesn't most of the time.

I dont think the forums is anti JRPG, its just anti not very good games. The JRPG genre has been very stale as of the past few years and its easy to rag on. A lot of people quote ZP cause its funny and does make valid points, though I don't see a lot of quotes anymore. Granted I rarely read entire threads anymore, just read the first post, make my own post, and then read 1 or 2 posts above mine.

I like JRPGs.

Final Fantasy, Persona, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Evolutia, Skies of Arcadia, etc.

Yahtzee is entertaining and has an opinion, but even he lets on that it's his own personal preferences painting the review. Some people agree and quote/paraphrase him. Others do not agree. So it goes.

One reason why Yahtzee gets quoted so much (other than that he is very quotable) is that he does make genuinely good points sometimes, in between the jokes and the vitriol. I've yet to play a game he said was good that wasn't. However I'm a PC gamer these days so JRPGs barely register on my gaming radar.

ZP's practically a legend over here. He's what got most of us attracted to this site in the first place, anyway. Of course people are gonna quote him. He also makes rather valid statements most of the time.
Frankly I don't really like RPGs as a whole...though there're moments in my life where the planets align and I decide to go pick up and play a good RPG.

Pretty much this, except my poison is this instead of Tales of Symphonia:

This site is filled with people that suffer from the delusion that people can't like games that they don't. It's quite sad really.

Also, Bioware fanboys. Don't get me wrong, Bioware make some pretty good games, but there's nothing more hilariously ironic than a Bioware fanboy saying JRPGs are full of cliches.

I second this but add P4 too. If you want Yahtzee's unbiased, non-comedic view on things then read Extra Punctuation. I enjoy those more than ZP, anyway.
Steppin Razor: It may have to do with one of the lead guys at Bioware saying "You can put a J in front of it, but it isn't a RPG." They have become rather elitist (and wrong).
