I'd definitely do it. I'd use it to make things better for myself and people who I care about. I figure that improving enough other lives would make up for it.

But even if I could only use the button to help myself, I'd still do it.

Starts to sound a bit like that terrible movie with Cameron Diaz and Jim Marsden... "The Box" was its name.

When the moment comes... we shall see if I would do such a thing or not.

My grandfather lived a long and healthy life. He died at the age of 94, he still drove a car. A mercades at that. Had his own house, a lucrative pension and everythig he needed, and wanted even. No one had to nurse him, he was healthy until the very end.

One day he tripped and fell down the stairs, breaking his hip. He was taken to hospital and died during the night. No medical reason. He just went. The evening before that he had told my dad, his youngest son, this:

"don't get as old as me. It's realy boring"

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that eternal youth and health may sound appealing, but at the end of the day when all's said and done, I don't think it's worth killing five innocent people over, especially if you have it first hand from someone who has been there (almost) that It's not what you want.

I honestly want to live my life (and end it) based on the consequences of my actions and on however luck may see fit. And believe me, I know about the appauling state you can end up in at old age (I'm a nurse)

Would i kill people to avoid that?

Still No.

If I can get all that instantly than life is boring and pointless. I will enjoy what I will do to get their and people will not have to die when I do get their so nope, no button pressing for me.

I don't care about the riches and stuff, just let ME pick the 5 people that are going to suffer horribly and die a most gruesome death and we have deal! I would probably only kill 4 and leave the last one out as backup plan so others might be intimidated enough not to annoy me further.

if you'd press the button you are evil.
that's about as complicated as it gets with this question.

I would press that button without second thought. There are so many people on earth! Five less won't make much of a difference. Oh and I wouldn't mind if I could choose the victims myself.
And besides: Valar morghulis. All men must die. ;)

I believe this is called capitalism. And chances are, everyone of us who owns a computer or bought electronic good has pressed this button several times.

I'll press it and feel really bad. For a few days. Then I'll feel bad from time to time for a couple hours. Fortunately, I'm VERY easily distracted. A single MLP memebase binge will cure my blues in a heartbeat. Plus, you know, if that whole "every whim catered to" bit is true, harem in a friggin' second.

Something very interesting just occurred to me. Very suddenly, I realized why I seem so casual about the decision. Okay, two reasons: For one, this is only a hypothetical. Put the actual button in front of me and I'll think a lot harder about pressing it. Second, in this situation I don't see the victim's loved ones at all for my whole life. If I press the button and two months later I see one victim's brother, THAT is going to haunt me for my life.
Ah yes, the faceless victims. How easy is it to know they suffer as long as you don't know their names or faces? Such a sad truth of humans, that the faceless victim means far less to us than one we've met.

Still, be that as it may, I'd push it eventually.

I don't know what I'd do. But I know that looking at the scenario from this perspective, I'd resent myself for the rest of my life if I pressed the button.

Frankly, I agree with several people's points that life without trouble or hardship just isn't life.

EDIT: Never mind, I'd press it. Person above me reminded me of the magic word Harem :3
And person #2 above me reminded me of the 'magic' of the technological industry :(

Two obvious things.

1: Obviously I would push the button. Countless people suffer and die before old age every single day, and most people aren't doing anything to change that. Not you, not me, not anyone we know. Why pretend that you care so much about human life in all its variety, when really you just care a lot about one zillionth of the Earth's population (your friends and family).

2: You created this topic with this title to get a lot of views and the associated profile badge. It's fine, I understand.

Eyup, there'd be five new dead people in the world. This is one of those things that lets you profit from lack of empathy.

What if everyone in the world pressed the button at the same time???

Anyway, Yeah I would push it without a second thought, I don't even wish I wouldn't.
they're going to die anyway, so why not now?

No, I wouldn't. I just hope none of you (who would do it) will ever become a Nuclear Power Plant Safety Inspector.

Every whim? Ok, I press the button, and then I revive those 5 people. *snort* *snort*

I definitely wouldn't.

Not only because I wouldn't be happy with myself for sacrificing five lives just so that mine's a litter easier, but because I don't believe it would even do me any good in the long run.

People who just have shit handed to them are usually the ones who end up with zero character and an inflated sense of self importance. I'd much rather work and fight for what I feel I deserve out of life than just have it given to me and become a hypocrite in the process.
