It's like someone told a joke, then everyone started telling the same joke, even to people who they knew had already heard the joke, for no other reason than it was the joke that people were telling.

I was mainly surprised how fast YouTube (or Google, if you will) came to recognise it - with Gangnam Style, I think it still took until it was number 1 and then about a week until they put it in the logo.
