But for the most part they're pretty dumb.

I am quite happy to say I completely missed out on this. I had a pretty busy week with uni assignments and classes when this started getting big on the net. When I had some time again, it already sort of passed. I've never seen an actual Harlem Shake vid before this thread... and am already wishing I had those 30 seconds back.

WHY?!

I don't hate it, it's harmless, but... why?

What is the point? What is gained by imitating this thing?

It's like someone told a joke, then everyone started telling the same joke, even to people who they knew had already heard the joke, for no other reason than it was the joke that people were telling.
What ? You mean like " the cake is a lie" and " the arrow to the knee joke? Don't tell me you're seriously surprised .

OT: i hate it . Like this isn't even something new. What the hell is going on?

So, new page. I feel many actually missed it, so hands up, everybody who actually followed the instructions in the OP and saw this.

I think it's been done into the ground, like every other semi-funny thing that becomes popular on the internet. You know the progression, someone makes a video that gets popular, then there's a whole slew of everyone and their dog imitating it, and eventually the only selling point is how much they're risking their jobs to do it.

I'm confused...

When did this become a thing? Is this supposed to be the new Gangnam Style? Why I am I just hearing about this?

Seems like it's just the newest fad for people to imitate and talk about until it gets run into the ground.

The problem with this is that its a single joke.

Normalcy -> Chaos

Now that's funny a few times but that's it. Its like being told the same joke over and over again with these videos because we all know the punchline.

I didn't get annoyed at Gangnam style's spinoffs because the original video had so many elements to riff on for later vids. For instance there was the song itself and how someone would arrange it in theirs, utilizing each of the different dance moves, using your local landmarks across an area to make it your place's version, re-enacting the various scenes in the video and actually getting a large group of people not just to go crazy but to dance in sync.

For example you could compare the Ohio state university marching band gangnam style to the London one, to the navy one, to the flipbook video, to the acoustic guitar version. Each had something different going for it. I'm not saying it didn't tire out, everything does, it just had greater reason to be a phenomenon.

Harlem shake is just one joke.

Huh, that's pretty funny. I prefer googles zerg rush though.

Also, I'm using this as an excuse to post this
The Barry Shitpeas segments of Charlie Brookers shows are always excellent at highlighting the inanity of much of modern culture, and I think few things are more deserving of the treatment than this.

So...

That's the whole thing?

That's pretty stupid. I'd rather people go back to Gangnam Style (and Gangnam Style got old quick for me)

People comment on, and reply to, the title, without reading the OP properly.
Yeah, but I think it's not just you and me - I've seen it in many other threads, too. I thought people just found the OP too long and sort of skipped over it, so I was hoping that by having a single sentence of instructions I'd avoid it but alas.

Pretty clever actually.
I was mainly surprised how fast YouTube (or Google, if you will) came to recognise it - with Gangnam Style, I think it still took until it was number 1 and then about a week until they put it in the logo. Or something like that, point is - the recognition and tribute wasn't that fast as we saw here.

It perfectly strikes the balance between length and WTFery. I quite enjoy them, although I don't seek them out.

The thirty seconds of the song are kind of awesome. The song as a whole is bloody awful. I find it sad that it's at the top of the pop charts.

The dances are stupid, but hey, doesn't the internet run entirely on liquid stupid? I say enjoy it.

I've heard the name, but this was the first time I've seen it. Watched the "original" video. This is what is popular now? Flapping your body around like a retard? To each their own I suppose, but I don't see the appeal.

Sounds like every fad ever.
