I just started Catherine and have a question about how its morality meter works. Do the actual choices themselves have an influence on which ending I receive, or is it purely based on how far the good/evil meter is in either direction?

It's kinda both really. It's the latter for the most part, then it delves into the former for specifics. There's 8 endings in all.

Hmm, thank you. No spoilers please, but are all the endings good? My current inclination is to either (a) go pure good and get the best ending, or (b), do as I actually want to, which will doubtlessly lead to me having my morality meter somewhere in the middle. I'm just worried I'll get a crappy ending if I don't go good, as has repeatedly happened to me before in other games.

Well, there are a couple endings which you could consider crappy, but honestly, it all comes down to your own morals, how you view the protagonist, and what you think is the best thing to do in his situation. So there's no real "good" or "bad" ending. You CAN land Mr. Brooks in some hot water if you make weird, contradicting choices however, but that should probably be obvious.

Interesting, that's cool that there is no "true ending" to trump all the others as a lot of games have. I'm starting to think I might just play and do as I would in his situation. So far I tend to vastly prefer Catherine, but am a good person apart from that, placing me in a neutral zone. As long as the ending is decent, I'll be happy :)

How you answer the questions in the final chapter determines which girl you get. How well your morality aligns with that of said girl determines which specific ending you get for her. :)
