Ive been looking around for a while and was wondering what instruments are available for a reasonable enough price that I could use to create some tracks to possibly perform later on.

I know of the Kaossilator Pro and also the LSDJ cartidge but these are quite expensive. Is there any other instruments that you could recommend?

Also, in terms of past musical experience I have played the violin and clarinet for several years but found they werent for me.

My friend recently bought a micro-korg for making dance/techno music type stuff, he has been able to recreate loads of bands like Crystal Castles and stuff. I had a go of the micro-korg and its pretty fricken sweet alright, loads of possibilities with it. You might need a separate drum machine though to make complete songs, but this thing is seriously cool to play with. I also found some good articles on musicradar.com before for making music, both hardware and software, so there would be a good place to look too.

Ok thanks I look at that site. I was unsure about the smaller korg models as I dont have other hardware to compensate with.

Many people who create dance music use free PC 'tracker' software. A friend of mine got a European label deal (he just released album #3) from tracks he made at home using FruityLoops. The best and most versatile instrument you could use for making and performing dance music is a laptop. Don't waste your money on expensive stuff unless you really must have a keyboard interface, but I assure you no-one in the audience will care what you have. Dance music is for dancing to.
