Don't know if it helps, but I played the Thief game in question on a lap top. I think I got it from Gametap, but that ought to make no difference.

Really? that sucks. Although I've been struggling to get the first 2 thief games working on my 32bit xp so it appears that compatibility issues isn't a new problem.
That's a completely separate issue - that's because the Dark engine, which runs Thief 1 and 2, doesn't get along very well with newer operating systems and multi-core processors. Check this FAQ[/quote] for all of your Thief 1 and 2 problems.

I got all my dark engine games working a couple of days ago using that FAQs, but thanks anyway. Finally get to see what all the fuss about System Shock 2 is about.

Anyway, looks like trying the demo is the best way to go here.
