In a recent press release promoting a new strategic alliance with Toyota to bring social media capability to their cars, Salesforce chief executive said "I want a relationship with the car in the same way that I have a relationship with other friends on the social network."

More story here [http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/application-development/2011/05/24/salesforce-and-toyota-plot-social-network-for-cars-40092867/?s_cid=938]

I can only imagine your car would make for a needy and expensive friend that posts inappropriately often to your wall.

OldBanger is in need of a wash - and is now overdue for his service *sadface*

What do you think? Would you like your car to be your "friend" in the Facebook sense of the word? How is this any better to just looking at the dashboard and checking the oil and tyres once in a while?

There are so many "sex with cars" jokes in here that I can't just pick one, so fuck it, that guy wants to have sex with cars.

No, I sure as hell wouldn't want that on Facebook. A completely separate site dedicated to giving me information on my car, sure, but just technical stuff, I don't want it cluttered up with anything the creators want to do to try and make it "more like an actual internet friend".

Jeez, and I thought the pet toy that allowed dogs to Twitter was the low point of this stupidity.

In my family we name our cars, give them personalities and over time they grow a mind of their own. So I'm already friends with the cars I drive :)

I think it would be cool if your car could post somewhere, somehow, about more serious issues than tire pressure and low oil. Like if a fuse was about to go out, or the air filter needed replacing, things like that. I think it would be pretty useful, but I don't think it'd be a good social networking thing. XD

I've named my car. I talk to my car. I've named and talked to my FRIENDS' cars. But would I want it as a friend on facebook? HELL NO. That'd just lead to more annoying app requests. For gods' sake, Vigo, I DON'T WANT TO PLAY TIRE TYCOON WITH YOU!

Let's see:

If you want, you can have a Toyota Prius in your Sims 3 game through free DLC.

If you have The Sims 3 Fast Lane expansion or the corresponding patch, you gradually build friendship with your preferred in-game vehicles.

Is there a connection?

Thats kinda crazy. I mean, I can't see ANYTHING that a car might be set to automatically send (GPS stuff particularly) that you would want anyone else to know about anyway. I mean, only young stupid people think its cool to have facebook constantly tell people EXACTLY where you are. Its just creepy and grown ups don't need that.

Also, with social integration, isn't that encouraging people to not focus on driving which is a bad idea.

Basically this is a retarded idea. Now the smartphone integration in the Jag prototype shown off a the blackberry conference was awesome. It has a dedicated powered dock between the seats just in front of the hand break, and from there it pulls the whole phone up to the touchscreen where the CD player would usually be, so you can use everything nice and easily, nice big screen, well positioned. It pulls audio and is connected to the car mics for calls and such. Its just a great integration.

I imagine that they will sell precisely zero 'Facebook cars'. Mainly because the kind of people who actually give two fucks about facebook are also too young to drive.

Pssh. My car and I have an agreement. I keep it running and it doesn't leave me stranded in the middle of the city with no other way home. We've had a few disagreements over this in the past but I think we're okay now. We aren't friends, we're associates... Its different.

Anyway, what a ridiculous idea! I don't even own a car but if I did I surely wouldn't befriend it.
