Okay guys, put on your tin hats, because I'm about to blow your minds.

Videogames are not biased based on gender.

I sense unease and shock. "Who is this man? Who is he to tell us this? He must be wrong! Why is he wearing that gorrila suit!?"

Allow me to explain. First, we shall go over the well known topic of ladies in videogames.
(This is all pretty much based on the default extreme at each end, there is a range between, and there are of course exceptions to both genders.)

The average female character ranges from=
Badass, sexually attractive, tough, yet still needs men to help her out.
too-
totally useless at everything but looks pretty.

And most FMC's that is completely independant and amazing still eventually ends up being overly sexualised or ruined by shitty writing and V/A work. (Yes I am still bitter about metroid: Other M)
So women are pretty much always objectified in videogames. Yup, that's true.

Lets look at the guys.
Average male characters range from=
Hardass military man who can do no wrong, but is redonculously proportioned even by arnie's standards.
too-
Hardass military man who gets drunk a lot. oh, hang on-
Isolated man, living on the edge, forced to become a hardass military- shit.

So you see? Female representation in gaming is overly sexualised, generic, and well, Unrepresentative.
Male representation is a power trip that makes all men look like (To quote Mr Hunt) Dicks.
And, sets as unfair and impossible to reach a standard as it does for the women. Scantily clad they are not, nor are they over sexualised. But they all set the same standard personality, lack of intelligence, and reliance on brute force that "All men share". Whilst it is less obvious when it occurs to men, gender politics in videogames are as negative toward men as they are toward women, but in completely different and less obvious.

And therefore, Gender does not effect bias when making a main character. It sounds insane, but think about it. Males are being represented as Muscular neanderthals whose solution to every problem is "shoot it lots". They may be the heroes, they may look physically perfect, but ultimately, they aren't people most men would want to be (I hope.) Females are being portrayed as helpless hopeless sex objects, their purely for the mans enjoyment. One or two of them might eventually pick up a gun and shoot at stuff with the boys, but ultimatly, the men are totally dominant. Again, I would hope this is not something most women would aspire to.

This is my opinion. I don't expect everyone to agree, but I'm glad It's been heard.
And now,

There are unfair/unrealistic representations of both men and women, yes. Anyone who tries to argue otherwise is silly.

Ultimately though, there is a difference between male characters often being designed as a male power fantasy and female characters often being designed as a male sexual fantasy.

Edit: and also, there are several other threads related to this topic that are still active.
