Humor is often built by bringing two unrelated points together in a clever way through observation. The brain takes these two points and connects them together, a surprisingly complex task, and your reward for thinking is a burst of joy.

So, when you take an attribute of a person, and connect it to something unrelated and insulting, your brain connects the dots and you get a rewarding 'lol' moment.

I could get more in depth, but I have a booty call to get to.

EDIT: This, of course, refers to actually witty comments. Just calling someone a fat, useless bastard is just mean spirited, of course.

Irony.

My friend beats me 100% of the time in Starcraft 2. When I see him, sometimes I tell him that he sucks at Starcraft. We both laugh, since that's clearly not the case.

Because everyone think its hilarious to put people down and apperently they also think its funny to continue to insult them long after the topic is dead. Mainly: No one is a good person, everyone will backstab you if they have anything to gain.

Because we don't really mean it? When we insult our friends it's humorous because we know that we don't mean it and it thereby strengthens the relationship to an extent. If you can insult a person and both laugh, it's safe to say you're good friends.

As to why we insult people we don't know? That's almost too obvious:
-anger
-a sense of superiority
-in response to something.

As to why the change in milieu that has allowed the free use of vulgar language?

That delves into deep societal changes, namely the liberalization of culture and the rapidly expanding nature of jargon and language in the digital age.

It depends on the familiarity you have with a person. Being comfortable enough with people to have them make jokes which could be insulting is nice in a way, it shows you can laugh at yourself and accept your flaws and that your friends like you regardless of them.

Only in that context is directly insulting someone funny. Walking down the street and having someone yell out of a window "You fat c***" isn't particularly funny, at least to me being the recipient. In that case though, it is meant with malicious intent. The purpose of the insult is to hurt feelings or damage self esteem.

Being called a big ugly fucker by my friend however is humorous as it is not meant with malicious intent. The words themselves could be insuting yes, but the context is more along the lines of an in joke, where I will refer to him as "baldy" when replying.

It all comes down to context at the end of the day.

It's not that being hurtful to other people is funny. It's just like any other joke: it's all about timing and cleverness. Take for example the classic Winston Churchill comeback:

"You sir, are drunk!"

"Yes madam, but you are ugly. And I shall be sober in the morning."

If Churchill had just said "Yeah, well you're ugly, *****!" it wouldn't have been funny, and no one would have remembered it.

It's not. Being a jerk in itself isn't funny at all. It's when someone does it in a clever, humorous way, and the victim knows they don't actually mean it. THEN it's funny.

Insults are funny when they're clever, witty and generally mean no harm.

When its just one guy swearing at someone else, or calling them a "homo", then its distasteful.

Y'know, I honestly don't see much more of an explanation than "If not taken too far it simply is".

Comedy's a very strange force, in the right context I can laugh my ass off at someone saying pineapple.

Wow, that's a really in depth explanation there.

I hate to say it but... This.

I've found humor to be general displays of superiority and bragging.

Other times though it's just a few friends messing about.
Pretty much what I was going to say.

Mostly the latter, if you look into it enough. Usually if you ask somebody to stop, they will.

Its' not funny, it makes them think there bigger then the person there insulting, so they feel better about themselves. Also when there in a group and one of them starts laughing at everything and anything they all follow suit.

Insulting people at something they're good at/ what they have. So if you had a rich friend you'd call him a poor fuckeat. But if you had a poor friend you just wouldn't say anyfing. It's like, my English Teacher said today. It's all about having a moral compass.
