I've been playing M rated games since I was ten. That being said, I don't think that most kids should be playing them. Not because it will make them violent, but because they'll learn how to trash talk, and be arrogant bastards if they play too many.
Kids aren't all that bad, it's the ones who take in too much "mature" culture, and turn into raging douche-bags before they hit twelve that are the problem.
Slightly disagree. I've also been playing since I had the chance to. Started around 10 with wolfenstein/doom and never looked back.
Kids (yay for generalization) today are rude, arrogant asses for a few reasons, mainly:
1: The media raises everyone to expect to be perfect and become a movie/music star/marry one when you grow up.
2: Raised to think they are special/unique/undoubtedly the most important person in the world.
And most importantly
3: Their parents do not value common courtesy! And I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!
When I grew up I was told to always say thank you for the food to whoever made it for me, to have a firm handshake, to respect my elders and to act CIVIL in general.
Meanwhile in games I murdered TONS of pixels, stole, plundered, warred and was more or less despicable. I do not become my gaming heroes, and neither do anyone else.
If parents simply instill the correct values in their children no amount of "mature" content can change that, it could even go the other way.
I'd say consuming more adult entertainment has matured me (some will try to protect their childrens innocence long into their twenties or worse...). Is it good for a 10 year old to experience problems/thoughts that usually plague grown ups? Maybe not, but look around. Kids experience abuse, families breaking apart or bullying which will have a far worse impact on a child than any mature entertainment ever could. And in some cases a good (and by good I dont necessarily mean nice or happy) story for adults will be far healthier than some stupid run dog, run - book. Stories makes you think, thinking about stuff matures you. This is not a bad thing.
In some cases I'd argue that some kids could really use growing up a bit more, instead of acting like immature brats. The reasons they do have nothing to do with the entertainment they consume and all to do with what their parents teach them.
