A side character who was better than the hero

The hero is almost always the character who saves the day and gets all the praise, but they usually have some help with them. Have you ever had a case where you liked one of the people who helped the hero out more than the hero themselves?

For mine, one of them would probably have to be Colonel Horyse from Sabriel in the Old Kingdom Trilogy. He plays a vital role near the end of the book, helping Sabriel and Touchstone get to
Kerrigor's body,
and his reward?
He gets a SINGLE SENTENCE in the epilogue telling us that a piece of building fell on him and killed him, and then he never gets mentioned ever again.

I'd like to direct your attention to FFXII. Unless you count someone else as the hero anyway. Which you should.

Well, I think that everyone in L.A Noire, I hated Cole Phelps after he... I swear, everything he did after that part was bad, any connection to him was lost.

I have to say Dominic Santiago from Gears of war. He is alot more interesting then Marcus Fenix and actually show emotion apart from frustration, anger, fury or rage.

Dom might be a better character but Marcus is the more likely protagonist in that type of game.

Dont get me wrong i like Marcus but i view him from a objective standpoint.

he was 100% more awesome than nomad, and his voice fit.

EDIT:

For me it's Basch or even Balthier from Final Fantasy XII....

For me it's Basch or even Balthier from Final Fantasy XII.... I found Vaan to be really worthless in every aspect!!!

The obvious one is Kato from "The Green Hornet".
I mean, say what you want about Van Williams (who ever the fuck he was aside from the guy who played Green Hornet) but BRUCE LEE!!! The show was even called "The Kato show" in Asia.

The Arbiter from Halo 2/3. That guy was so cool, and he had a personality. When Master Chief was all "Grr. I kill things now," Arby was making fun of prophets as he killed them. It's too bad he got shunted to the side in Halo 3.

Thaddeus from Mogworld comes to mind. An incredibly powerful wizard who is near on par with the god-like main villain but he chooses not to use his magic throughout the entire adventure until the very end because no one asked him/ he didn't care to do so.

Well, the villains in any Resident Evil game (except maybe Re4) were always far more fun and interesting than the protagonists...
Also more likable.

I was generally rooting for Umbrella and Wesker.

Well there's Tails. At one point he was able to run just as fast as Sonic and no matter how many times he's used as a mammal shield he comes back as though he has unlimited lives. Also, Tails can fly.

VGs aside, I've got nothing off the top of my head...

Knuckles can do everything Sonic can do and he can climb walls and fly.
I also thought Morrigan was by far the best character in Dragon Age.

My favorite characters are almost always the sidekicks, or at least lesser heroes in an ensemble cast. Frodo never could have made it into Mordor without Samwise, Pinky is way more fun than the Brain, and I lose major girl points for even thinking this but Xander Harris put a lot more on the line to fight evil than Buffy (the Vampire Slayer) ever could.

Alistter from Dragon Age Origins.
Tali From Mass effect. You really didnt learn enough about her in my opinion.
Lets see uh Morrigan was goood also from DRagon Age Origins.'

Edit: From someone farther down Coal train and Baird from Gears of war. They just make a kickass team!

Everyone in your party in Persona 3, the main character to me was an unlikeable jackass from start to finish.

I guess this is sort of an alternate character interpretation really, cuz the amount of people declaring him "Persona Jesus" must mean i'm in the minority.

Every joinable NPC from Mass Effect. Also Joker, and half, wait, make that, 3/4 people with dialogues longer than "Hi".

General Rahm Kota from The Force Unleashed.

The main character was Starkiller, an over-powered canon-crushing whiny schmuckfaced schmuck.

Rahm Kota was the only character with any real personality or characterization. Not to mention, he was hilarious. Constantly mocking Starkiller (and refusing to call him anything other than "boy"), muttering at you drunkenly through the menu screen, and generally being more entertaining than every other aspect of the story combined. He even almost made up for PROXY, who was sort of the opposite of this topic - the most annoying side character ever.
