For me it's Basch or even Balthier from Final Fantasy XII.... I found Vaan to be really worthless in every aspect!!![/quote]

I was about to mention Basch and Balthier, when I saw that you did it.

but it seems that we have missed the essential FF title where all supporting cast was better than the "hero" of the story...

Zeke from inFamous. He's a cool guy, even though he can be a pain in the ass later in the game.

EDIT: Coal Train from Gears of War. Screw Fenix (Pheonix??), He is one of the best game chararcters I've seen in a long time.

Here's something I noticed.

Quite often, there is a supporting character (Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, Lestat from Interview with the Vampire) who is infinitely better/more popular/more entertaining than the protagonist (Will Turner, Louis).

The creators realize that their popular supporting character is basically what made the movie/book/game. Sometimes they themselves fall in love with that character (Anne Rice). Then they make all future sequels feature that character as a protagonist.

It invariably turns out terrible. It becomes all about this wacky-awesome character getting up to their wacky-awesome hijinks, and you just get sick of them really quickly.

Better to use them in small doses and leave the audience wanting more than to give them so much that they become fed up.

I would just like to take this opportunity to say that I always liked Robin a lot better than Batman.

Dom Santiago, Gears of War. C'mon, do I really need to explain? Marcus was alright, but Dom had actual emotions.

Well, I think that everyone in L.A Noire, I hated Cole Phelps after he... I swear, everything he did after that part was bad, any connection to him was lost.
Oh yes, that part. That part where you scream at Cole to stop and try and figure out why anyone involved (whether a character in the game or making it) thought this was a good idea or consider the motivations for that event.

I used to think Cole Phelps was a great protagonist, then THAT happened.

For what it's worth, I've always found Rebecca and Shaun infinitely more interesting than Desmond and Lucy in Assassin's Creed.

The first one that comes to mind is the scarecrow from Howl's Moving Castle. I was watching it for the first time with a group of friends. We all agreed the scarecrow was the most interesting person. Whenever he was onscreen, he would be the most interesting person in the scene. And in the end, he turned out to be the prince and voice acted by Crispin Freeman.

I'd like to direct your attention to FFXII. Unless you count someone else as the hero anyway. Which you should.
Ok, I'm gonna stop you right there. You can't just blame FFXII. It's every Final Fantasy, or at least 7-12, the ones I've actually played. XII is just the most blatant offender. Never have I wanted to feed a video game character to wolves faster than Vaan, which I did incidentally. I mean who really cared about Cloud? Squall? I actually did like Zidane, but Vivi was just too awesome. And Auron completely stole the show in X.

Too many to count.

Favs? Roxas in Kingdom Hearts, Toph in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Daxter in Jak & Daxter.

The Arbiter from Halo 2/3. That guy was so cool, and he had a personality. When Master Chief was all "Grr. I kill things now," Arby was making fun of prophets as he killed them. It's too bad he got shunted to the side in Halo 3.
That was the point of master chief. He was a self insertion character, Like gordon freeman. However, unlike Dr. Freeman, chief only said the bare minimum to progress the story, you fill the rest in yourself. That's why he never showed any emotion, because the game didn't want to influence how the player felt.

For me, It would be Mikel arteta from FIFA 12. Sure Robin Van Persie scores all the goals, but its artetas well timed runs, Impeccable skill and pin-point accurate crosses which assist Van Persie to his goals.

Also, where the fuck would dullard Desmond be without Shaun,

The obvious one is Kato from "The Green Hornet".
Haha! Mine is also named Kato, but I'm talking about the one from Gantz. The main character, Kurono, is a whiny, horny little prick. Kato is a nice guy (albeit, sometimes a little too nice) who only wants what's best for his little brother.

Tails being better than sonic comes to mind (hell, i even prefer shadow and amy to him more often than not).

Also Baltheir, Penelo, Fran and a couple others are definitely better than Vaan from XII.

As cool as Jak was, i think characters like Keira and Torn and Ashelin were more likeable in my opinion. Still, ill always like Jak. (not so much his new voice though....)
