Sunshine? What sunshine? This is Britain and hello world.

The internet can be a wonderful thing at times. If used correctly, it would add on a bit more benefits to your life that will keep you happy and going. Gain new interest, meet new people and explore new ideas. The internet is free and open with a world of information. However, in many cases, there are always downsides that can create problems for others. It would lead to many complex situations and problems that will cause too much of a headache.

Time for a break then?

Just a simple break away from the trolls, the headache, the unneeded stress. I'm not saying give up the internet. Just, take a break. I bring this up because I see many times in many threads, mostly from this site and others, where some seem to take everything a bit too seriously and a bit too personal. Heck, I've even had moments where I just needed to escape. The news doesn't help either. Once again I am not saying to ignore the news, but too much of it could leave you feeling more... well too involved. Take a break.

What do you all think? Do breaks from the internet or news works for you? What advices do you have for others? And do you have any thoughts on the whole thing and what are your experiences?

Breaks don't really do anything for me but then again, I doubt I'm your target audience for this post. I'm old and jaded and bitter enough to realize what a waste of time "internet arguing" is anyway so in general, I really don't participate (same with politics and all those other hot-button issues). Now maybe that makes me part of the problem but again, old and jaded here :D

As for advice for people, I'd think the advice is pretty easy; find a non-electronic hobby. I coach soccer and I play golf when I'm not murdering bits of code on my console or watching people get murdered on the TV/movies/books/erotic snuff films. When I do venture onto the internet, I have gotten pretty good at recognizing who's here to debate and who's here to argue; a very handy skill if you want to keep your sanity and insist that you have to be online at all times to argue against strangers.

Sketching and music are great for that. Who could possibly fight after spending an hour with a sketchbook and a nice cup of tea?

Immerse yourself completely in what you choose to do.

You know, I have have noticed that too. Can tell who's there for a general debate and who is there to just cause problems. If you focus on one thing for too long, it just all blends into one and you can't tell the difference.

I don't think a break is entirely needed. You will likely just kill time indulging on something else. I think the best idea would be to find a somewhat constructive hobby like painting, skateboarding, sharpening sticks.. whatever. Then whenever the interent is causing you grief go fiddle around on a twig and eventually it'll be a sharp stick. Yeah man.

Nope, I am too far gone (well too glued to the screen) to take a break from the internet. At the most I can take several hours break from it (when I'm out) but I cannot be away from it 24 hours!

Responsible use. That's all you need.
True, but many would try to push the limits of responsibility with the internet. Have fun with it, but don't let it bite you back in the butt.

Considering how much of my work involves use of the internet, I couldn't afford a break if I wanted to.

And considering I use websites as a diversion while I do work, I'm not sure I could divest myself from the "wrong sites" and still get work done.
