I want you to look back with me for a moment. It was the 80s to 90s, there was no internet and unless you or a friend had a subscription to a magazine the only thing that decided whether or not you bought a game was the box. This process ended badly sometimes, but it was also how we discovered hidden gems or found we liked games the majority did not.

That said I present you with this challenge; buy a game without any information other than the box or word of mouth. You might end up blowing $60 but you might end up with something you are very happy with and would not have played otherwise. If you do buy a game post it here with your initial thoughts and once you are done post your final thoughts.

Get to it!

Already did it. Me and my father were browsing the local Gamestop back in 2002. We decided to go out on a whim and buy Red Faction. Long story short, We had some GREAT times.

I only did that with TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. The cover looked cool, it's one of my favorite games to date.

Did that with Dynasty Warriors 3 purely because the box said it was co-op.

Four games later and me and my mate are still addicted.

I did this with Viva Pinata: Party Animals a couple years ago. Me and my buddy's hadn't had that much fun in a while.
On second thought I did that with a lot of games... The Darkness, Overlord, Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey, Lost Odyssey, Fable, Destroy all Humans 2, Morrowind, Kameo, Chrono Cross... rather a lot of games that I ended up loving.
Bear in mind Viva Pinata was when I was 17 and still a rather big pothead. I was stoned pretty much the entire time I had this game in the console.

Also did that for Mercenaries 2, very disappointed.

I refuse. Give me $60 if you want me to gamble.
Yeah, my friends kid with me about how much I look into a game before I even set aside the money for it.

I think I bought a game on a whim once like that, but it was a while ago and I can't remember what game it was.

I do this very often.

Games purchased with this method include:
Valkyria Chronicles
Battlefield 1942
ArmA
Silent Hill
Codename: PANZERS
Silent HUnter
Medal of Honor (The original Playstation one)
Iron Storm
and too many others to list.

I've done that before, but buying used games because I'm cheap. Doing that got me one visual novel game that me and all my friends got addicted to ("Mizu no senritsu") and one was a visual novel because we cracked up reading the back so bad we had to get it (it was a dating sim where you're a girl trying to score a boyfriend from a host club) and that drove all of us batshit insane because we could NOT figure out what we were supposed to do to get the guys, and got nothing but bad endings.

Playing Japanese dating sims with your friends is surprisingly fun, and any company that got off their butts and translated some of these would have a lot of women and girls throwing money at them hand over fist.

Katamari Damacy.

Unexplained ball of stuff on the cover. Something about destruction on the back. Rolling, rolling, rolling... And that was only $20...

Also did that on Platypus because it said it was designed entirely with clay. Not as good a buy as Katamari, but only because I have played Katamari SOOOO much.
