A skill-based fighting mmo?

Is there any skill-based fighting mmo? What I mean is, something like, say, soul calibur (I actually want to say melty Blood: Acct Cadenza, but I dunno how many ppl actually know that game), mixed with grand chase/maple story/latale/etc. The latter games are all whack, whack, whack. Whereas games like soul & melty could be as complicated as you want them to be such that the more complicated u make urself about it, the better u are at it.

In other words, a (probably side-scrolling) mmog where level isn't everything, where skills & your own personal experience can contribute to your strength... like learning combos.

Yes. Let me find you them.
Or better yet, why not google for 'em yourself?
Just see what happens when you put in "fighting MMO."

Miracles.

Really, though, the ones I've played were mediocre at best. Like smash brothers without the polish...
Or fun.

Isn't Maplestory supposed to be something like that?

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and give my suggestion to Mabinogi. Yes, stats and leveling are still very important to the gameplay, but much of the combat itself can be fairly skill-based. There's a rudimentary combo system in place, and more advanced maneuvers, like executing a counter-attack, require a modicum of decent reflexes.

Learning to use google before I ask was the first lesson of the internets.

But yeah, what you said in the end is exactly why I'm asking.

If you've ever heard of Upshift Strike Racer, you'll prolly know what I'm looking for. Upshift is a racing game, but with machine guns, missiles, & mines. A level 1 can easily beat a level 10 with skill & some luck. A level 10 can evenly compete with a level 30. While that depricates from the point of levelling, it nontheless makes a memorable game. It was mostly skill-based.

When it comes to games like Maple, Grand Chase, etc, it's just tap-tap-tap... It's like grinding except instead of auto-attacking once uv selected a target, u hafta attack each time manually. Mabinogi doesn't look much different from the gameplay vids I saw.

KwonHo has been cancelled.

and wow. I just lost hope in the existance of a "skill based fighting mmo", because if u google what's between the quotes, ur first result will be... this thread -_-

Edit: Currently downloading Gunz & S4 League for the frickin heck of it. Will prolly delete 5 minutes into game.

Rumble Fighter and Lunia would be your best bets, but they aren't side-scrolling.
I actually like Lunia pretty well, but the game literally repeats stages after a certain level.

Age of Conan was extremely fun, for those of us who were just interested in wandering around ganking lone players.

Wouldn't a fighting game MMO destory the MM part? Fighting games are about 1v1 combat.

yeah, kinda with Gamer137 as well, I dont exactly know just what your looking for here.... If you mean you want an MMO with some real FIGHTING where its not just click click click, or ctrl+click for auto attack, then I'd say your best bet would be Mabinogi, as it has one of the best systems for that. A low level character could have just as good a chance at beating some areas as a high level character. Also, not paying attention while fighting will get you dead. Period. No matter how expensive your armor is and how much HP and defense you have, they are really just to keep you from getting OHKO'd from a strong attack or a critical hit, not to say that might not STILL happen. Its a very skill based game, and despite its aesthetic choices, its a very solid game with a lot of customization depth to characters, and a lot of skill required for fighting. Choosing between attacking, smashing defense, countering, and defending are the base of the matter. It sounds simple, but its not when an enemy is in defense and you run up to smash it and it cancels defense before you get there and attacks you first.

Overall its a solid game.

Other than that, if you mean Fighting "Fighting", then the best you can look for is probably Grand Chase, or something subpar to even that level of gameplay...

What exactly do you mean by "skill-based"? Every video game can eventually be stripped down to memorization and reflexes, MMOs are just much more transparent about this.

Well it's true that everything needs at least SOME skill to be good at, but what I meant was a game where your own HUMAN skill at playing the game/reactions etc will be the major priority.

So you can imagine a game like street-fighter or soul calibur in an mmo world if you want, that would explain it alot better. It's not a bad idea too: You roam a 3d world, lock onto whatever you wanna fight to engage them in the classic fighting-game style... others can lock onto people already fighting to make a chaotic rumble of a battle. hmmm. Where's the mmo suggestion board?

And you want a game that can handle that level of complexity for thousands of player simultaneously? That game would have a horrendously high monthly fee to afford the kind of supercomputer servers than can pull that off.

GunZ is a combination of sword-fighting and gun-fighting, and you could go onto maps with 8 or more players last I remember, and it was manic.

I might see if they have fixed that game, because when I played it years ago, I don't know if they were hacking, exploiting, or you had to do that, but they were doing some crazy shit that I couldn't do, which I didn't mind at all, it was the damn levelling and acquisition of weapons, it took ages. I mean how long do you expect me to run across walls blasting this mediocre pistol when people are toting shotties and assault rifles?

Whew, turned into a rant out of nowhere there, my bad.

Yeah, GunZ is still filled with crazy hackers. anyway, if your looking for a Third person shooter/melee fighting Online game like that, I'd say check out S4 League, it runs, and looks, better and cleaner than GunZ. Neither GunZ or S4 League are really MMORPGs per say, but they have some character customization and chat and such, but they are really just a collection of server chat rooms with matches listed for people to join. No world, just matches.

One can always dream ^^

still havent tried any of these, but i decided I'll try in this order: S4 League, GunZ, Mabinogi. hoping I'll find a good distraction -_-
