No, wait! Don't go yet. This is going somewhere interesting I promise.

Ok, so I (along with what appears to be a great many people) am of the opinion that the current ending (whatever unconfirmed rumors there might be) that we have to ME3 is, to put it charitably, not deserving of the rest of the game or series. I'm not going to waste anyone's time saying exactly why I didn't like the endings, because I people are getting sick of it already and, well, I've already said why in other threads and so has everyone else who shares my view.

What I found could be potentially good thread material was the amount of people who have said that they're just going to make up their own ending that pleases them and consider the current one to be either incomplete or simply non-canon. So, if this is the stance you are taking, set the scene for us as to how you personally would have ended the game. It will be fun I think to compare our different ideas, and who knows, if those unconfirmed rumours have some basis then maybe someone at Bioware is listening for ideas. Long shot I know, but why the hell not?

My idea:

Ok, so I'm building off the indoctrination theory being at least partially true. Shepard wakes up, seriously wounded, after Harbinger's airstrike (He/she's managed to survive because 1: Harbinger wasn't using his main gun, which would have destroyed the Conduit as well which Harbinger needs to process all his new thralls with. The blasts came from smaller auxiliary lasers instead and 2: Shepard was only on the edge of the blast, it didn't hit him directly).

You survive whatever choice you made. However, what you chose dictates how much latent indoctrination is still present and how it presents itself, with hallucinations and voices in your head reflecting whether you chose Destroy, Control, or Synthesis.

Shepard, unable to move quickly or defend himself, then has to stealth his way to the conduit without being spotted by Reaper patrols and Husks. Your latent indoctrination will try to lead you astray and into the path of danger, so you need to be observant as to what's real in the world and what's trying to trick you.

If you reach the Conduit it teleports you right to the top of the Citadel tower, where you open the station's arms and let the Crucible in. This is when you discover the the Crucible is basically a giant supercomputer, the only thing in the Galaxy with enough processing power to hack into the Reaper mainframe itself, allowing you to literally get inside their 'mind' where they are most vulnerable. All it needs is someone to operate it, that someone being you.

So through the Crucible you upload your consciousness into the Reaper mainframe (this will play out very much like that mission with Legion on Rannoch, as well as ME2: Project Overlord). You fight your way though to the very depths of their collective consciousness, while they try and block/terminate you through various means. The final fight will be with Harbinger's 'avatar' inside the mainframe (exactly how this fight would play out I'm still thinking about). Once you've killed Harbinger, the loss of his consciousness from the mainframe momentarily 'stuns' the Reapers, essentially putting them on standby as they try and reach concensus on who their new leader will be.

This is where you get the choice between Destroy and Control. If you choose Destroy, the Reaper threat is wiped out for good. However, the consequence will be that Shepard dies, as his consciousness is deleted from the main frame along with the Reapers, and his body is left brain-dead. If you choose control, Shepard survives and the Reapers can also be commanded to help the Galaxy rebuild. However, Shepard is aware of the latent indoctrination, and can express through dialogue that trying to control the Reapers is a big risk, and may have unforeseen consequences in the future. It's up to you to decide whether your Shepard's survival makes that a risk you're willing to take.

In the ending cut scene the Reapers either keel over or declare their allegiance to Shepard depending on what you chose. Your overall Galactic readiness, as well as you rep with your crew mates, determines who survived and who died back on Earth. It will be possible to save all the major characters, but only if you've done pretty much everything (I wouldn't want to make it too easy on you :p) If your Shepard survives, you see them awake back in reality, get picked up by The Normandy (or Admiral Hackett if the Normandy gets destroyed, I'm going to make that an option) and rejoin the survivors. If you die, then it cuts to your funeral, held on Earth, with all the survivors present.

Roll credits

It's not perfect by any means. It's lacking in detail and more than a little cliched, but overall I think I've done a pretty good job for someone with no previous work with either writing or making games. So now you can present your own ideas if you wish, as well as commenting on other peoples suggestions... politely!

Disclaimer! This thread is not meant to be offensive to anyone who worked on Mass Effect 3. I'm not trying to tell them how to do their jobs, and I respect their hard work even if I didn't always like their results. This is just a bit of fun for people who want to flex their creative muscles a bit.

I'd like to think that it all wasn't real.

Not the indoctrination theory exactly, but, everything that takes place after the discovery of the Eden Prime beacon was the wild imaginings of a dying Shepard.

It's similar to Metal Gear Solid 2 in a way. Whether it was real or not doesn't matter. But the underlying themes and lessons that you learn are what really count.

Would explain why you could take a giant laser beam of death to the face and live, how Anderson beat you to the punch, why you couldn't join up with The Illusive Man, Joker fleeing, and the Stargazers.

It wasn't real, literally (it's just a video game), and in the context of the story.

Or.....

Maybe it's all some form of a meta-narrative.

Bioware strips you of free will, like the reapers, and only allows you to play inside the boundaries that they have set. Drawing you in with promises of wonderful characters and a grand story (indoctrination), only to take that all way.

And you have to play out your given roll.

I need scissors! 61!

Maybe I'm just going crazy here. D:

I think the best ending would be a plain straight-forward ending. Basically everything all the way up to where Hackett contacts shepard about the crucible not working would remain the same.

No technical issues, the crucible fires as planned.

Slow dramatic music. Big explody thing happens just like in the existing ending, but without blowing up the relays. You see soldiers down on earth fighting when the explosion wave sweeps through. Reaper troops all suddenly drop dead. And the reapers themselves go dark and drop. The soldiers, and all your squad mates down on Earth look up and cheer.

Zoom out to space, the flying reapers are all going dark too. They're already dead, but the galactic fleet opens fire to make sure and they explode easily without shields.

Shepard looks out and sees the reapers exploding. Shepard smiles, then slowly drops his/her head and dies. Fade to black. Roll credits.
