Most every time I see a suggest an anime thread, I always throw in two personal favorites of mine, noting when I do that they probably aren't anything like the animes the person making the request had in mind, but that they were a wonderful change of pace. Unfortunately, though I'm always suggesting these, I rarely ever find anything quite like them, though I honestly wouldn't be surprised at all to find that the list of animes like them is quite limited to start with.

I'd like to take a moment to suggest them to you all, because they are a couple of the mostly unknown gems of the anime world, and to ask if you've knowledge of anything similar to sate my tastes.

Mushishi: The story of Mushishi is a little bit difficult to explain at first, because you have to understand the base concepts in order to understand what it is about. Mushi are spiritual life forms, invisible to most humans, though they are an integral part of the world in which we live. When they come into contact with humans they can sometimes be like diseases, bringing seemingly supernatural illnesses to the humans who have been infected. Ginko (who can be seen in my avatar) is a Mushishi, a "mushi doctor" if you will, traveling about a land suspiciously similar to ancient Japan; studying mushi, helping people who have come into contact with Mushi, and often helping to save the Mushi as well.

Most of the episodes are stand alone stories, dealing with one case that Ginko treats per episode. Mushishi isn't high on action by any means, there are no battles or anything like that, instead it sells itself with breathtakingly beautiful scenes, interesting stories, and a quiet contemplative atmosphere. There are some deeper thoughts on life as a whole to be drawn from Ginko's life, and I often find Ginko's commentary very insightful. For anyone who enjoys it the Manga on which it is based is also excellent (the show is very faithful to the manga, though there are more stories in the manga that did not appear in the anime), and Katsuhiro Otomo (best known for writing the epic six volume manga Akira, then directing the film based on it) directed a live action adaptation of the show which is itself quite a masterpiece, though I imagine it might be somewhat confusing to someone who had not seen the show already.

Kino's Journey: The Beautiful World: Kino's Journey tells the story of a young girl, Kino, traveling about a fantasy land from one city-state to another on her talking motorad Hermes. While this premise may sound a little silly, the show itself is far from silly (except when it wants to be). Where Mushishi is thoughtful, Kino's Journey is genuinely philisophical. The show does have some action sequences, but they're far from mindless, appearing not to fullfill some arbitrary action quota, but because they genuinely add to the plot.

Kino's visits to each city-state last three days each, which she states is because it gives her just enough time to get a feel for a place, without becoming too involved. Much time is devoted examining the nature of life, studying the way we as humans interact with each other, and even looking for the deeper meaning of everything from our work to our wars, and the way we are affected by literature. That said, the show often does not outright state an opinion on an issue, prefering to open up the question, present some viewpoints, and allow the viewer to think it over for themselves while Kino and Hermes ride off for the next city.

So, my two suggestions made, I would like to know if anyone can think of anything in a similar vein? Even it's not in a similar vein, I'm not really too picky, I watch and love everything from Fullmetal Alchemist to Clannad, though I really would like to find something else that captures the feeling these two animes have done such a good job creating. It doesn't even have to be an anime, though I'll admit I actually do generally prefer the aesthetic of an anime. Anyways, many thanks to those who make suggestions, and to anyone who decides to take my suggestions, do enjoy!

I've heard a ton of good things about those two, though I've yet to see them myself.

Not sure I have anything in my list that I could give unequivocal recommendations to; I generally only feel comfortable tailoring my recommendations to a given person's interest.

That being said, I probably come closest to unequivocally recommending Princess Tutu. It's got a pretty clear shoujo bent, rather than a less classified philosophical piece like Mushishi or Kino, and it's beholden to a few magical girl tropes (notably the transformation sequences). Still, it's a pretty unconventional magical girl show nominally about fairy tales and reality (just what about fairy tales and reality isn't made clear until quite late), with side bonuses if you're an enthusiast for either ballets or classical music in general; they inform the soundtracks, usually with a theme closely related to the current story or episode plot (music from Coppelia for a certain episode, for instance, or a revelation about the town done to Mussorgsky's "Great Gate of Kiev").

I've only seen two of the movies so far, but I might eventually give a similar recommendation to Kara no Kyoukai. It's extremely esoteric so far, but it's also deep and gorgeously animated and scored.

Hmm, so to sum up your wonderful post, you want anime's which help you examine the human experience and philosophies, or make you more properly consider your own? If this is the case, I'll throw a couple in there:

Eve No Jikan (aka, Time of Eve): A GORGEOUS anime made last year, it is six episodes dealing with humans and androids, and how alike we will become. The androids in the series all wear halo's over their heads to distinguish themselves, and try to 'act' like robots. But what happens when there's a place where they stop wearing their halos and be themselves? Can we tell the difference between human and machine? And if we can't.. what does that say about us?

Ergo Proxy: A little more action-oriented, but still deeply philosophical. Post-Apocolyptic future where people live in carefully controlled domes with personal androids to help them. But a plague called Cogito has infected many of the androids, allowing them to start thinking for themselves. Another one that tries to deal with the nature of humanity, and how we're not really what we think we are. Also some pretty sweet fight scenes :p

Real Drive-Sennou Chosashitsu:
The Real Drive is a "neo-futuristic science-fiction suspense" story is set in A.D. 2061, when a new, more secure information network called the Material Network (or "Metal") has taken over human society. However, aberrations begin to crop up as individuals chafe against the rigid system, and so-called "cyber divers" are dispatched to investigate these incidents.

Serial Experiments Lain:
Lain Iwakura appears to be an ordinary girl, with almost no experience with computers. Yet the sudden suicide of a schoolmate, and a number of strange occurrences, conspire to pull Lain into the world of the Wired, where she gradually learns that nothing is what it seems to be... not even Lain herself.

Ghost in the Shell:
I don't think this one needs an intro.

Toradora!
The best romance anime I've ever seen, and one of the small handful I've watched more than once. Sure, you pretty much know what's going to happen but the characters are so great and the animation is so beautifully done you just don't care. Any single person on the main cast oozes more charisma out of their pores than an entire cast from a shonen anime rolled together. I just love this series, if you need a pick me up (and trust me, you will if you watch any of the above animes. They aren't happy), this is the show for you.

I've realized I'm not good at describing these things, so I'll give the appropriate links. Also I've realized all of them are sci-fi and dealing with technology.. guess that's just my thing ;) They're all extremely cerebral though, I hope you'll enjoy them.

Before my recommendation, I must celebrate: ANOTHER CLANNAD FAN! I freaking love that anime, but so few people have seen it. Holy crap, it's amazing. I'm starting the visual novel on which it is based.

Ahem... anyway, I highly recommend Orphen (otherwise known as Sorcerous Stabber Orphen) if you haven't seen it. Fantastic fantasy anime. Not really the same feel as the ones you mentioned, from what I can tell (though I will definitely check them out now), but great nonetheless. Just make sure to get the first season rather than the second: the second is titled Orphen: Revenge, and focuses more on comedy, not getting serious at all until the last half. It's still good, but the first is much better in my opinion.

Just a quick recommendation, you said you liked FMA. Have you checked out Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood which has recently been released? Similar story, just based more closely around the manga and with a very different feel. Well worth a watch.

I watched it at the start, but then I ended up having to cancel my cable subscription to save the rediculous amount of money it was costing me, and since then I haven't seen any of it. Though, FMA is one of the few mangas I still bother to keep up with, and the manga is still, in my opinion, the best iteration of the Fullmetal Alchemist story, so while I'll probably watch Brotherhood at some point, I don't feel like I need to go out of my way to see it immediately.

Haibane Renmei. Its a leisurely-paced, contemplative anime that leaves a lot of questions up to the viewer's interpretation. Also, the music is absolutely beautiful, and the last episode has one of the most emotional scenes I have ever watched. Definitely check it out.

Another one you might want to look at is Spice and Wolf. Its another nice slow-paced anime, focusing much more on dialogue than action, with exceptionally good character development. And economics lessons. Delicious economics lessons.

For mentioning Kino's Journey, the OP's getting a friend request.

Also, I haven't seen all of it, but Scrapped Princess may or may not be a good series to recommend in the context of this thread.

Hmmm.
The only Anime i can suggest are Ghost in the Shell and RahXephon.

RahXephon will feel a bit like Eva but, it does do its own thing.
It just got a little too slow for me and boring.

Other than that i cant suggest much.

We do have an Anime Group.
