Go! Recommend one to me now, I have played none.

I wish to play one. Or more. I have an urgent need to use my newly purchased joystick!

I don't know about recently, but back in the day X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-Wing_vs._TIE_Fighter] was the bomb.

Graphically, X Series hands down. But its not fast game play.

You are probably looking for freelancer, but its a little dated.

Freespace 2 with the Freespace Open mod installed. Modern graphics and gameplay in a genre long dead.

X-Wing Alliance? Wing Commander: Prophecy?

Those are the only space fighter games I've played.

There hasn't been any recently. That game genre probably died when it was required by law for every female character in a game to have boobs as big as basketballs.

Though Star Wars Starfighter was good.

Tie Fighter is the king of all space fighter sims. Too bad older games like that one have such poor compatibility issues with modern computers. I'm tempted to assemble an older machine solely for 90's PC games.

Google "DosBox" my good friend. The latter version supports Joysticks as well :)

Check out Jumpgate Evolution [http://eu.jumpgateevolution.com/?territory=EnglishUK]. It's a space combat MMO (sequel) currently in beta. It has a lot of potential, especially considering the fact that the first Jumpgate was also very good.

Ah good old Dosbox. I never considered trying dosbox with Tie fighter. I used Dosbox for my old Microprose games. Speaking of which, I could go some Sword of the Samurai right now...

I'll be giving X3 and Freelancer a look, I'm not one to cry about graphics when gameplay is good. So long as my eyes aren't bleeding.

Thanks all!

Wing Commander and Starlancer. Freelancer is good but it is pretty wide open and doesn't get as hectic or fast-paced as Starlancer. Wing Commander Prophecy and it's expansion Secret Ops are extremely fast-paced (especially Secret Ops) and are a lot of fun.

Seriously, hunt down X-wing vs. TIE fighter, if you're willing to sacrifice a little in the way of graphics in favor of good gameplay.

Try out some mods for Freelancer.
There are tons of good ones out there. Also for graphics and effects.

Another vote for Freespace, I really enjoyed those games. Although it does contain one of my all time most annoying missions.

You are escorting your massive capitol ship through an asteroid field to a warp gate. You have to break up the asteroids that are big enough to do major damage to the ship. It's harder then it sounds and I failed it a few times. Right at the end before the ship jumps out a enemy cruiser jumps in a blasts it to pieces. Seems kind of ironic that I failed the mission 1 minute earlier for that ship blowing up just so that it could get to a scripted event for it to blow up.
