Okay, this is a thought I came up with when my parents, the evil bastards that they are, got me into Stargate SG-1. Now, I loved Stargate the movie, and I love Stargate the show. And I love Hulu, for letting me watch every single SG-1 episode ever without needing to track down the DVDs.
But what else do I love?
X-COM!
And so my brain went: Aha!
X-Com + Stargate = best game idea ever?
See, here's my reasoning. You play as the commander of SGC. You recruit soldiers from various branches of the US military, picking operatives who have the right stats and training for your missions. Arm them with the best of human military hardware and send them through the gate.
You form these people into SG units, ranging from SG-1 to SG...however many you want, actually. SG's go off world to randomized planets, with various objectives. Empty worlds can have external bases on them, for mining or technological research too dangerous to pull off on Earth. Worlds with primitive humans or moderately advanced humans or even the Tolan or Tokrah would allow for diplomatic communications. Trades, alliances, joint missions and so on. And finally, you have the massive majority of the planets controlled by the Gho'uld System Lords.
When an SG team contacts with a Jafa Task Force, you go into an X-com esque tactical turn based combat system. You fight them, and you can gain various alien technology this way. There are other aliens to fight as well - from Replicators to...well, random critters created by some kind of random critter generator.
There would be many paths to beat the game. You could kill every System Lord in the game (which is a long and arduous task, as you have to get ON their Motherships and destroy it...before they escape. You could discover one of several super-weapons (Anti-Gho'uld bioweaposn, inaquita enhanced nuclear bombs and so on) and use them on enemy planets.
You can free Jafa and get them to join with you, aiding you in combat.
But, of course, there are dangers! The Gho'uld are very powerful, and you are quite small by comparison. Funding, also, would be determined by how much you get "out" of the Stargate program. Winning battles, rescuing alien populations, killing System Lords, and gaining alien technology or making breakthroughs in science all increase your funding. Losing battles, putting the Earth in jeopardy, or allowing Gho'uld to attack SGC and gain a Foothold would drop your funding. If you lose all your funding, the SGC is shut down and the Gho'uld arrive and sterilize the planet.
This game would be awesome...
