Hey everyone...
I was just watching the short clip for Empire Total War called "superior tactics" where the ai was programmed to use some special formations or something similar to that.
While i was watching, i saw the guy trying to provoke the ai struggle with manuevering his units around some enemy troops...meaning he basically had to click to the right, wait for his troops to get htere, then click up, wait, and then click to the left, wait, and then finally click down to charge, all while the rest of his units were getting pulverized...
The Ai "GO HERE" command is very prudent and sufficient for must basic rts's. However, for more complex rts's like Empire, where the unit's position *say on another units flank ect* matters greatly, the "GO HERE" command becomes innefectual because the ai will simply choose the shortest route, instead of going around THEN attacking...
This is why i propose a simple mechanism that will help the player manuever his troops in battle much more easily. Have the player click on his troops and then holding down a special command key, let the player draw out a line on the battlefield that the unit should follow and engage upon. Therefore, all the player would have to do is do a quick sketch of exactly how he wanted the unit to manuever very quickly and then get back to his other units instantly...
What do you guys think?
