Alright so I don't know about any of you but I've been looking through Amazon and thought to myself ''Wow, these games and consoles are really overpriced''
I mean the 3DS for instance is still (at best) £130, and it's 3 years old and has 2 superior models.
Likewise, the PS3 is about £180, that's with the PS4 being out.

So I decided I may as well start a thread about it. I hope this won't be a circlejerk about how bad prices are (though I certainly haven't helped) but perhaps this could be a thread where we could give each other tips on places for good deals, and maybe to predict when price drops for consoles and certain games would be happening?

Well, this doesn't help with the console front, but you can get some really cheap games for Steam from Amazon itself. It might sound obvious, but I didn't realise that they sold digital download codes which you can register with Steam.
For example I got Borderlands GOTY and Borderlands 2 GOTY for £9.99 and £8.75 respectively, when they're £19.99 and £34.99 on Steam at the moment. If you want something and you can't wait for a sale, it's a good place to check. It's also worth noting that you can use the same code for both PC and Mac, so you're essentially getting two copies which you can give to anyone you know with a Mac.

The same applies for some Steam games and Origin. If you have Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age II, The Sims 3 etc. on Steam you can usually register the codes on Origin for a second copy. You could easily split the cost with a friend and share the game.

However I don't disagree that consoles are still pretty expensive. Within a year or so of the PS3 coming out I bought myself a spare PS2 (original, silver) for £25 with two controllers and a memory card. By contrast the price of the PS3 is still pretty high, even second hand.

Last gen will drop more when new games for the current gen start coming out that are actually worth a damn. I just check various online stores and high street shops usually you can find good deals unless you need to get a game when its released in which case you will have to pay more ofc.

I am not to bothered about the price of games though I rarely spend over 20 pounds on a game for consoles now and a lot of the time it around the 10 pound mark which is fine I think the most expensive game I have bought this year is Blazblue Chronophantasma which cost me 45 pounds after taxes because I imported (and then arc actually decided to get their act together for the first time ever and release a digital copy in Europe for 28 pounds) but I really wanted that game so I dont regret the money spent.

Beers whats expensive dammit that needs to be made cheaper. They will try and push up the price again this gen of games just like the start of the PS3 and 360 era hopefully they dont get away with it or I will be gaming less 40 pounds is ok any more and 90% of the time its a big no from me unless for some reason I must play it like Blazblue for instance.

Keep checking websites and social network groups that look for price drops. There's a Facebook "like" page called "10 ways to have more money as a student without working" that posts amazing deals, and there's always hotukdeals.

If you're a PC gamer as well then it's always a good idea to check out green man gaming, cjs cd keys, steam sales, humble store (and bundles), you get the idea.

For console games then there's always your local small time businesses that will sell games at a fair price based on current market value if they're run by someone who knows what's they're doing.

There's also generic pawn shops like cash converters where they'll either be fair or they'll have no concept of what the game is worth thus either in the worst case scenario would make games over priced, but often will have under priced games too.

As for consoles, if you have a spare 2.5" sata hard drive laying around with a fairly decent amount of storage (such as enclosed within an external hard drive enclosure you have no use for), then you can purchase a 12GB PS3 super slim for £100 second hand and put your spare HDD into that. You can also acquire a Fat PS3 60GB for £105 used.

Xbox 360 is cheap if you go for the older model (£50 and up). Be sure at the very least you get the 60GB hard drive for it though, especially if you get GTAV.

Wii consoles sell for £30. 'nuff said.

Other money saver tips, never buy games at launch as the price drops within less than a month noticeably (especially sports games), Xbox 360 GOTY editions of games often come with a second disc with all the content and can be shared limitlessly, only buy special editions of games when necessary (i.e. really cool collectables or substantial DLC) or when the price difference is nominal. Buy DLC in bulk when possible, so GOTY editions for example. Steam also does DLC bundles occasionally at a reduced price.

There's also seasonal periods to get cheap deals. Summer sees a lot of used games traded in for people to spend on trips and stuff, which means used stores will get an excessive amount of stock that they will try to get rid of cheaply. Same applies to Xmas when people need money for gifts (such as new releases).

Oh and console games for 360/ps3/wii are at a low right now because of new consoles being out, but they will lower further once more games are released for them, and I'm talking the system sellers.

Unfortunately if you want the luxury of always having the newest released games and hardware, then you'll have to poney up the extra cash, but if you're willing to be patient and a bit behind and follow my advice then gaming on a budget is very achievable regardless of platform.

Well trade in values are still dropping now so you can probably buy one of another person or ebay or something cheaper but The retail places aren't going to lower their prices till the companies lower their prices. Which right now they won't since the big name games are still coming out for everything. another year or so when nothing but madden and other EA and call of duty are coming out on the system will you see it start to lose value. Still persona 5 is only on ps3 ;p
