Well, a few hours later and I'm still serious about this being used for spy work or something along that line.

Again, I say, it's meaningless, if you can't get them to stop playing by talking, an electronic device that pisses them off because they couldn't save before their console got turned off won't exactly help things.

Also, did I read correctly that the person making this is SEVENTY-NINE years old? Yes, he's undoubtably an expert when it comes to video games and how to handle kids who want to play them >_>

I've seen it mentioned a couple of times, but what about RPGs? What about adventure games? Basically, what about any games what aren't about mini games that people actually have to bother to save. I think someone should attach it to his life support system, set it for five hours, and then see what it's like to have something you invested time in cruelly snatched away.

i dont see the big deal with it all anyway, games are not doing anything bad to anyone and im almost certain they dont harm the player in anyway. so just leave us to play are games it what i say.

What's the real purpose of shutting off a kid's console? To make them less antisocial? To make them spend more time outside? To stop arguements over console time? If anything, this will make more arguements between parents and children, and make them more antisocial because of the arguements. This device will do nothing but make gamers angrier.

But I do see why they're doing it. Massive gaming sessions are unhealthy, and this is a way of at least starting to stop them.

I remember as a kid my mother shouting at me to get off FFVII, and pulling the plug as I was fucking saving. [small](48+hours lost if i remember correctly)[/small]

I summoned the playstation gods wrath to help me and she cowered as I laid down in full on demonic force one of this worlds most epic hissy fits.

Then I probally got grounded aswell. Its all kind of a blur after I started going skitz.

could the kid concievably, before they play, unplug the game from the device and put it in the wall anyway?

3: I must make it clear, this idea leaves me greatly distressed. If parents think they can have something else-a machine no less-do what they should be doing themselves, what will the future hold for us as a species?
These machines you talk of... are you referring to the timers, or the consoles themselves?

If a parent is going to use a machine to entertain their kids, then why not use another machine to switch it off?
Good idea! And we can even have machines to tell them when to go to bed! AND A CURFEW MACHINE!

Um yeah, This is a good idea on paper. But in real life it just cannot work effectively. Try kicking a hormonal 15 year old off world of warcraft in the middle of a 20 person raid that he or she just spent 4 hours trying to assemble? Odd are someone is going to get shot. (more likely just grounded for cursing out their parents.)
Parents have gotta grow a pair and be FUCKING PARENTS!! If they are afraid or unwilling to come into that room and get their child off the machine then odds are a fucking egg timer attached to the cord is not gonna slow the kid down.

I understand the need to get out of the house, but that should not be forced upon the kid by the parents unless the kid just spent 22 hours straight on wow or some shit. That kinda crap does need to stop. Again, there are in-game and in-console timers that help you manage that insanity.

And guess what, you dont have to give 30 dollars to some old guy who enjoys taking children's toy away and laughing at them when they cry. Actually he sounds like an asshole to me.

I don't like this device at all, it just takes away responsibility from lazy parents. Parents need to take control of their kids, and kids should respect the parent enough to listen and do what they are told. Communication between parents and their children has been on a steady decline and this device will bring another little excuse for parents and their kids to not communicate.
This...

When I was young the thing that kept me from doing bad things the most was knowing that my parents would be disappointed in me.

Yet another way kids will learn to circumvent their parents. Apparently you can just get a spare power cord and not care, and I highly doubt that thing will stand up to a hammer + screwdriver.

The xbox 360 allready has somthing like this in it.

Its called a family timer and when it runs out you have 1 min to save your game before the console shuts itself down.

Remember that quest in Oblivion where you lead the guy across the map?

"Wow, I can't believe I finally made it! Now to save the ga-*console shuts off* NOOOOOOOOO"
=P

That's the only kind of think I see coming out of this. Shut it off yourself for crissakes.

Moot points, all. Like parents of gamers are actually reading what we write here. I completely agree with all the "device to circumvent actual parenting" opinions.

Kids are smart, especially gamer kids. When grounded from my systems as a kid, for whatever reason, I had myriad ways to get my fix. Back-up power cords and AV cables- used only in the muted oblivion of night, mind you- playing at friends' houses when possible, and my good old Gameboy and me defied many a parental directive.

Videogames are like life. They find a way. There is always a way. Fight for your right to rot your brain, kids.

There isn't really anything wrong with the concept but why can't parents just take care of their children themselves? This is just another excuse for them to be lazy and not be parents.
