Great article, reminds me of why I loved Un Goro Crater in WoW so much. There are three massive elite T-Rex that patrol the jungle, and if you agro one, you die. Nice sense of malevolent danger while you cautiously pick on the smaller flora and fauna.

Although, I will have to curse you for tempting me yet again to subscribe to another MMORPG. My bank account can't take it man!

That, right there, is why I wanted a piece of that spindly legged behemoth and why I spent my entire WoW career playing in dungeon instances. It's also why Demon's Souls is keeping me up until four in the morning with alarming frequency. If I am to be a God, I want it to be simply because I've kill everything else in order to get there.

I am a danger hound myself, often going in attacking elites by myself just to see if I can. This includes Hogger, where I will slowly work my way into the hound of hell, culling his soldiers, until it is just the proud gnoll and myself, facing each other over a short distance, bodies strewn all around...and then a rogue comes in and backstabs him, stealing my kill.

With small differences, I would say yes, considering JF's description. Besides the part you get a quest to kill Hogger, he drops loot, and isn't a random wandering spawn, they can be considered comrades separated by a universe.

Pretty much every MMO does this. Even as far back as EQ but I think WoW was the first to remove all loot from wandering elite mobs. I really have no idea why they do that, maybe just to kill botters and people with lag, but if you are gonna go to all the trouble to make a mob and put him in the game at least put something on him, it doesn't have to be good, just a small incentive for groups to kill him occasionally.

aion elites are a little stronger than you might think...
most classes cant solo elites and the classes that can cant solo this guy
there is no escape if he finds you, you wont live to run very far

as a further example, lvl 40 mobs hit my 40 sm with 3.7k hp for 240 and lvl 63 mobs hit my 63 hunter with 5.4k hp for 118 (both being non elites, elites hit for somewhere around 1k)

While I haven't played more than an MMO demo in the last 6+ years, I did play SWG back in the day. I recall one particular moment, where I came across a higher level Imperial npc. I sat there watching him from a distance wishing I had the levels required to take him down, when another random player showed up. We eventually teamed up, and with a bit of creative kitting and luck we managed to take him down. It was awesome and we were pumped. We wandered over to check out the loot only to find nothing. It was so anti-climatic. Like the earlier comment, I wasn't expecting anything grandiose, just something, anything. This was my experience with loot let down.

All you WoW-playing, Horde-loving folks who've traipsed through Ashenvale Forest can remember this feeling with just one word:

Sharptalon.

Sure, he had a set patrol, but that patrol brought him very close to Splintertree Post (the primary Horde outpost in the area) and the nearby forest is so littered with slimes and stealthed hostiles that it's easy to miss him while you're running along with 20% health trying to find a safe spot to heal.

And, yeah, those Devilsaurs too. They thump and make the ground shake when they walk... so why do they keep catching us by surprise?!

Me and my friend two manned this guy at level 13. It was a good feeling to take him out. We got some random green from him. I like the idea of loot not dropping off of enemies sometimes as you mentioned in the article.

The 3rd area is a gank central. I would say the same as Stranglethorn Vale. Portals open up and you can party up and go ganking the opposing faction on their own turf.

MMOs should be more random than they are. Everything is to predictable most of the time.

Too many times was I bested by that Red-Level buzzard! When I finally vanquished him through the use of potions and gouge-bandage I stood over his corpse and screamed victory into the night. Right up until his stupidly short respawn timer clicked down and he came back for revenge, sending my slinking away, wounded, in a puff of smoke.

This does raise an interesting question, however. Who is the greater Crab Norris... Paksigue, or... Ghostcrawler?!

I always think of the Fel Reavers of Helfire peninsula. They have a patrol, that covers pretty much the whole zone, the ground shakes when they near, and then there's that sound.


And I think it's worth mentioning the character who actually became so legendary Blizzard gave him a backstory and part in WotLK; High Overlord Varok Saurfang.

I was almost intrigued and tempted to try the game out by this article. Then I read the comments and remembered it was a MMORPG.

Hogger > All. He single-handedly killed an entire raid consisting of Ensidia (if I remember correctly) members (Note: Ensidia is one of the best PvE's guilds in WoW).
