More I hear about this game, the more I wonder what people like about it.
People like it because it's a very good game, and they find its unique style of gameplay and/or story enjoyable. You don't have to like it or even play it, but I fail to see the point in commenting barely-on-topic just to bash something you haven't tried.

OT: The issue being discussed in this thread, while temporarily inconvenient for WWmelb, is a good thing, as it solves a very real problem from the first game. Ruining someone's virtual day is no fun if they can just up and disappear on you.
I have tried it. And I don't find it fun.
I found it fun. Clearly you are just wrong.

Plus, what you've basically said is "people like it because it's good". The main problem I have with this game is that every situation I've come across seems to have been designed with the intention of "how hard/tedious/overwhelming can we make this encounter?", instead of how they could've made it interesting yet still challenging. I've played it for a few hours and there were already so many scenarios where an enemy or two just jump out of nowhere, or there's some beginners trap that shows up. Almost to the point where if I saw an enemy, there will be another who'll come in from another angle for sure. So it wasn't even surprising at the point, and I just went "yup, this crap again" before going in.
Those bodies on the ground that you didn't kill? They aren't dead. You should be able to figure that out the first time it happens. I figured it out the first time I touched a bloodstain nearby these guys. It isn't that hard. Then again, I always see like 50 bloodstains in front of the basement skeleton, so maybe people are just really bad.

It's possible to make something hard, yet fair. And this game loves to shove that whole "hard as balls" bullshit constantly in your face, both within the game and in its marketing. It just makes it that much worse to see it miss the point that hard.
Almost every move has a tell, almost every enemy can be spotted before they show up if you pay attention, every attack can be dodged or avoided, most in a reasonable manner. Generally, if a boss is hard without a summon, one will be provided for you. Traps are always visible. I don't see how Dark Souls is unfair. It can be punishing, it can be hard, it can be rude, but it is always fair.

Tedious level design, frustrating mechanics, and terrible controls are not the way to design a difficult game. Hell, look at the issue being brought up here. Invading another player's game just to kill them is utter nonsense. It should have been its own mode, not integrated into the single player, where I have enough stuff to deal with.
In some cases, name them, their controls are fine just stop mashing buttons. You seriously lost all credibility with that last one though, Dark Souls does exactly what you tell it to, the controls are pretty much perfect (though I haven't played the PC version and I've heard that the default mapping is terrible).

If you don't want to be invaded don't go online. Shit, I was online and human for all of three areas and wasn't even invaded once. It seriously is not an issue. Also, use some of the items that wreck an invader's shit, they're given out like candy. Some of the most fun I have playing this game involves invaders or invading.
