Where's the pistol? I've gone over where it used to be in the original game, but I just can't find it!

It's not there. Or at least, I didn't find it either. While most weapons are in the same spot, some weapons (like the pistol, shotgun and indeed the crowbar) aren't obtained until later in the game. Though, you've probably noticed by now that Black Mesa is not a 100% exact remake.

Spoiler: For example, I got my first pistol...

... rightafter my first encounter with houndeyes. Upstairs from that area, you can find a scientist, whom you can lead over a couple of catwalks to a security post, which he'll then open for you. Inside is a pistol and a couple of clips. At least, I'm remembering it like that.

At first I looked in the original spot too and then I tried to get the first security guy you come across killed by zombies, but the new Barneys are far more competent and can kill scores of them. Mind you, this was before I had the crowbar, so I couldn't whack him to death either and I hadn't noticed about the flares either, so I just moved on.

I found my pistol before I got the crowbar. The security guard got overwhelmed by zombies and I hauled off with it. Finding ammo for the pistol is really freaking easy, considering that it uses the most plentiful ammo in the game.

For the first part of the game, up until you run into the soldiers, you should be swimming in ammo. Use the crowbar on most enemies, pistol for pesky enemies, 357 for vortiguants, and you usually have a security guard friend with you.

I got it off the security guard as well, otherwise just use the flares for a bit and you'll find it a bit down the way.

Yeah... sorry for being harsh... but I've been through it back when I thought a iMac would be a good investment... 0o
