I have this game, and I sunk about 2 hours in before getting lost looking for the ambroisa barrel. Haven't gotten around to going back since. A friend told me this game was 180 hours long minimum. This friend however, has told me some strange things in the past. So is it true?

Secondly, that first mission at Liberty Island seemed really tedious, does it get better? I doubt it's actually 180 hours, but it's a long game, and since the visuals are a dog's breakfast, the gameplay needs to be engaging.

180 hours?!?
There's no fucking way this game took me anywhere that long to beat.

It was a long, long time ago but I'd put it at somewhere around 20 or 30.

Agreed. I don't think anything I've played has taken me 180 hours to beat. I think the most I ever spent in a single playthrough was about 80 hours on Fallout 3, but I was doing absolutely everything (and that includes DLC).

Its about 20 years worth of replay value, but a single playthrough, about 30 hours maybe 40 on first go.

Although the Statue of Liberty feels like a lifetime to complete it's probably a good indication for the rest of the game's style. The good news is that the first level is probably the most boring of them all. After you get to Hell's Kitchen it is ALL about the story. It's a real page-turner of a game. The first time I played through it I got really into it. Definitely a thinking man's game. Don't expect big set action pieces and you'll love it.

Where did you even get a copy of Deus Ex 1? I can't find one anywhere.
It's on Steam ya know?
Holy crap! When did this happen?!
In ages long since past...

On topic it's the balls. Not balls, THE balls. 30 hours... Also, if I remember correctly, the Ambrosia is a glowing green thing like one of the water cooler bottles.

Well since it's halfway ontopic I might as well ask here:

Is it impossible to knock someone out in one hit in Deus Ex?
It sounds like a minor complain, but after playing through the older Thief titles, I was extremely irritated when guards didn't want to fall asleep after a gentle tap on the back of the head.

I stopped playing after the first level, because I was unable to leave the whole building filled with unconscious guards when i left :<

Man, I'm the opposite of you. Did you try playing the tutorial? I recently begun playing Deus Ex and the game rocks. The enemy AI is stupid as all hell, but I'm really enjoying the game. On the mission you're on with the Ambrosia barrel (which I played today) I spoke to some starving kid, and he told be about a secret tunnel after I gave him a candy bar. That's just cool.

I don't think it would be 180 hours- that's obscenely long for any game.

It usually works for me. I just approach them from the back and whack them in the head with a blunt instrument. It's a one-hit KO and is very handy. Make sure you're close enough to them (usually, if the box comes up, you should be close enough), and you many need to be sneaking.

Deus Ex has location based damage. You need to actually hit them on the head not in the back.
hmmm it may be I just hit them in the back because you don't need to aim for the head in most games.

Gotta try this again after I get a new pc.

180 hours is definitely stretching it, I mean it isn't short but other than mmos or open world games i've never gotten close to that much time in one game.

Deus Ex had decent graphics for the time, so don't start ragging on it because you think you're critic material (just saying, don't get all offended because I'm honest either, please).

The storyline that you get into is pretty interesting once you start finding out what is actually going on and the skill system that rewards exploration and doesn't strictly reward slaughtering everyone is really cool.

Also for the Ambrosia barrels, first hint: fortressy castley place. Second hint: subway, then a certain guarded building.

There are a variety of paths to choose in this game. It normally boils down to either being a walking death-machine, or a sneaky throat sliting hacker. Of course you can dabble in a bit of all the skills, but you may find your weapons dealing medicore levels of damage. If your melee skills are fail you may need to swing twice to knock a baddie out with a baton even if you are sneaking and not running. You will definetly need rifle skills if you plan to use the Sniper rifle extensively, IMO the most broken weapon in the game once you get it silenced. Heavy weapons are also pretty fun if you can stomach the Gun-ho approach. It's not Gears of War, this game is great for it's own reason's. Pay attention to the storyline, plan and strategize and don't be afriad to be an asshole. One of the best features of this game is that you CAN change the outcomes of the storyline. My one peave with the game is the Swimming skills and the strength Aug seem to be useless. In the sequel you can actually pick up garbage dumpsters, operating tables, small vehicles, even dead bodies and throw them at people, like Spawn raging out in the alleys.
