I'm obsessed with research.

Really, if a fact comes out about something, I dig and dig and dig to squeeze out every detail I can, even if the fact itself was something I normally wouldn't give two #($&$ about. So it was the case with DirectX 11.2; personally, I have only the foggiest idea what it means, but it was more information pertaining to the consoles, and so I gobbled up a few articles, looking for any tidbits

And I found such tidbits. More noticeably, though a majority of the gaming and tech media seem to have announced that, console-wise, DirectX 11.2 will be an X1 exclusive, a handful of articles have instead stated 'Next Gen Consoles,' with a couple even reversing their 'X1 Only' stance with updates. A couple of the sites were Windows 8 devoted blogs, for that matter, so it wasn't exactly Sony sabotage at work. Now, one could argue that the 'Majority' had spoken, but if the Games for Gold insanity showed anything, it was that the media can sometimes simply be wrong. (In fact, a few sites are insisting that Watch Dogs will use cloud processing to be more 'dynamic' than PS4, despite the fact that its evidence is... bleh... that's another thread.) So, whenever I heard two opposing opinions, I generally run out to find out for myself, if only so I can pass the information to those who might labor under faulty information.

The thing is... I can't FIND any confirmation that DirectX 11.2 is an X1 exclusive.

Sure, I can find articles TALKING about it, announcing that Microsoft said it would be a Windows 8.1 and X1 exclusive... but I can find no direct press release, no video interview, not even a direct QUOTE specifying it.

In addition, in glancing over the Build conference's discussion of Tiled Resources, the presenter mentioned, at beginning and end of the presentation, that the software would be available on 'Next Gen Console.' Which, between not specifying X1 and yet not using the plural term, consoles, is just more uncertainty. Granted, the thing was basically forty-five minutes of computer talk, so it's possible he snuck it there somewhere in the middle.

So, what I'm asking the learned folks of the Escapist, is whether they have stumbled on any primary sources confirming that this is to be an X1 exclusive, not to be seen on other consoles... or if the MS PR wheel is in full spin. -_- It seems that it gets harder and harder to find concrete information lately, as everyone is rushing to 'Get The News Out' without considering fact-checking.

(...not the Escapist though! You guys rock. :3 ...please don't ban me. ._. )

Well that was an awfully long way of asking one question.
Yes it most likely is an exclusive Directx version for Xbox 180, as is the one used in 360, consoles always have software specific for them because they can run better that way (in this instance it probably also adds monkey flail and mobile support). And no Directx will not be seen in any other consoles as it is proprietary MS software also their monopoly insurance for PC gaming.

Only thing that might be a worry is that Win 8 exclusivity, they might be about to pull another Vista bullshit where they tried to bully people into the new OS by making OS exclusive games... and hopefully they get burned just as much as last time, and for the devs signing up with MS right now you know very well this will end badly for you.

Well the PS4 doesn't use DirectX as far as I'm aware. I thought they prefer OpenGL. So it is exclusive in a way because no other console will use it. Maybe. I didn't do a lot of research on this.

Or maybe Microsoft simply doesn't want to tell people that the PS4 will also be able to use DirectX 11.2. Why would they? One of their guys even had the audacity to say that MGSV is Xbone exclusive on Twitter. Sure, he apologized, but he never deleted the tweet. It's obvious why.

Direct X 11.2 is currently available only on Windows 8.1, and is so far used only on a very few Microsoft games. And naturally those games would only be ported to Xbone if they're on console. There will be something similar to Direct X 11.2 under the hood of the XBone, but that's only important to devs. The PS4 will also have some sort of firmware doing similar things, but the user never needs to know about it

Basically it's completely irrelevant to console gamers, as games are either released for a specific platform or not.

It will be used on PC, as another Vista-like thing to try to force people to upgrade from Windows 7, but most publishers won't rush into the the new OS until a large part of the market has it. Like, it's only within about the past year or two that devs finally abandoned Win XP support for most games.

DirectX 11.2 is apparently going to be Windows 8.1 only and for MS because they've got the rights to it. I don't like it either, but I usually don't prefer DirectX unless I must use it.

As a PC Gamer we're basically forced to use Microsoft software in some form. However, I do tend to choose DirectX over Open GL though as the performance is normally a bit better, and I'm using Windows anyway. Yes I know there's Linux, but most games don't run well on that.

Not forced, per se, but I know what you mean. I don't like it because of the fact that it isn't easily able to be ported to Linux. See, I'm an aspiring game developer, and I believe that every platform should get a chance. :)
