If you start the game as a New Shepard, can you, from the character creation screen, choose what happened before the Prologue of Mass Effect 2?

EDIT: I now know that you can't, but please answer this(to the best of your ability):

Why not? It seems quite reasonable. If you haven't played Mass Effect before and are starting with Mass Effect 2, and ignoring the question "Why are you starting with ME2?", you should be able to choose what happened.

Goddammit.

I have the game, and was hoping that you could but I missed it... And shit, I can't.

Now, my question is now: Why not?!

Well, technically you can, but not through normally playing the game. You need to download Gibbed's Savegame editor, then you can actually change lots of things from your playthrough, even midgame - changing a class or gender for example.

Note that this is modding and therefore any damage that occurs will be your own fault, so if you do try to use the editor MAKE BACKUPS. :)

Because the choice amount is huge, and far reaching. There are so many references to ME1 and the people you met, and the choices you made, in ME2, that you'd spend an extremely long time 'setting up' your new Shepard.
Either replay ME1, or suck it up and just play ME2.

Also, the developers probably assumed that, without the context of playing the first game, the choices would seem kind of meaningless.

My best guess is so that you buy ME1.

It worked on me!

[sup]Quick explanation: I had the original Mass Effect for XBox 360, but switched to PC shortly after, so I bought ME2 for PC. Then I couldn't transfer my save game, so I had to buy ME for the PC in order to transfer the save.[/sup]

I have replayed Mass Effect, like... I think 10 or 12 times.

Currently replaying using my Male Paragon Engineer(and then doing my Female Renegade Something), so that only 1 of my ME1 Shepards has a Love Interest.
