Recently I have just gotten interested in modding, like PC games and I have seen some cool things from made up weapons, levels, and even gravity control!

So I was wondering as to how you do it or how to get started. I am primarily a counsel gamer, but I would like to know more about the PC.

And yes I know I can just Google it and get lucky, but I would like to hear from people. People that have first hand experience modding please, and that might know some tips or tricks especially on how to get started.

Thanks in advance.

I started Modding when Morrowind came out. I've released tons of stuff for the TES community.

What game do you plan on modding. If it is Fallout, you should go on a fallout forum and discuss this.

If it is TES, I'd be gland to help!

Here's the bottom line

Moddding is hard and frustrating. Only get into it if you truely are dedicated to it. The reward is very sweet.

Especially if you plan on releasing your mods. Critism is hard to swallow.

hmm Im not sure where to start exactly TES would be fun, give me chance to go back to oblivion, and I heard the G.E.C.K in fallout is like a modding tool.
but what I want to know is, is how to get started in general is there a specific tool to download?

If you really wanna get down the the complicated stuff and i MEAN seriously complicated, you should hack and mod NES games. Oh the difficulty of Hexadecimals, you curel and unintuative misstresses. I shouldn't have to say i was being sarcastic. Although i did enjoy that summer holiday making my own platformers and shooters.
That sounds fun,but incredibly hard, how did you start?

Depends on the game, like you said the G.E.C.K is the Fallout 3 mod tool, TES has it's own one. SDK is for the source engine, so TF2/CSS/L4D/HL2.

The Unreal engine was just released for modding, so you could have a look into that.

What sort of games do you like, what sort of mods do you wish to do?

Well a good PC would be a start.

Like D4zZ said, most games have their own tool.

For Oblivion it is the CS or Construction set. These are free to download, and there are many manuals/walkthroughs for getting you started

If you are going for TES, I have the site that I started with on a book mark if you want it.

Also, its important that if you are really into this, you complete the toutorials and guides fully, Even if you believe you understand the topic

If you want to know about modding, talk to me. I am rather experienced with Warcraft 3 world editor and Fallout 3 Garden of Eden Creation kit.

Modding is easy if you have someone there next to you to show you how to do it.

Well I'd like to do something cool with an FPS like Half-life, and I've looked at some of EPIC's Unreal engine and that looks like it would be fun to create on as well, but generally I'm looking to work with an FPS.

Well the Unreal engine has good FPS', not sure how many tutorials will be about however because it's just been released to the public.

The Source engine has a lot of tutorials to get started with, it is also quite popular so a lot of people will (and can, with the low system requirements) play it.

However I have only ever made maps. Which I suggest as a starting point, or skinning if you are artsy.

When you get Half Life 2 it comes with the SDK, I don't think you need anything for the Unreal engine except a decent computer to run it on, I have limited Unreal knowledge though, I'm more of a Source games fan.

You're Welcome! Feel free to message me at any point in the future if you need help

The TES modding community is still very active, I suggest joining a site like TESnexus. I just recently retired from modding for a while.

The UESPwiki has some great reads on modding and oblivion in general.

In my personal opinion i find the SDK of tes 4 much harder to use than the G.E.C.K mostly because there is no finder/serchbar and no texture sets.

Normally I do 2D art and was looking for a way to project my art in the game world.
Since I want a future in the game industry, you say HL2 comes with SDK, do you know if the OrangeBox has SDK or just HL2 in general.
and thanks for the advice.

Look for a website community to help you. I do the occasional mod for the PC version of Oblivion, and there's this site called TES Nexus that has a lot of user made content. A lot of that content is aimed at making it easier for other people to mod. Also, look for tutorials and freeware programs that you may need to make custom content. The tutorials are a must, and make sure you can understand them. I still haven't quite got the hang of Blender.

Well, you need some sort of editing programme/software, if say you wanted to mod fallout 3 then you would have to download the G.E.C.K, i think you can find it on the fallout 3 vault website.

( if you're having trouble finding the vault, then just type in say, fallout 3 gauss rifle into google, then one of the first links will be to a page somewhere in the vault.)

Not a whole lot of full stops in there, were there?

Orange box defiantly comes with the SDK, and I highly recommend it.

Can't forget Battlefield 2's modding tools. You can make everything from a map to a full size mod to the game.

i would start out small, get Warcraft 3 and program Hero units and abilities in there first. yes it isnt exactly moding, but it can put you on the right foot.

currently trying to get explosive arrows for a hero.

I first started modding halo. I even delved into texturing a bit. I would start out with somethin that is generally easy to do and start out by just dicking around make a gun shoot rockets etc. Just do some easy stuff at first and get your footing depending on the program you are going to use.

It also depends on what you want to do. Do you want to map or do you want to play around with programming and the like? There is soooooo much to do when it comes to modding and it really fully depends on what you want to do and how much time and effort you want to put into it.

Steams modding tools arent a bad thing to play around with for some more intermediate to advanced stuff (I couldnt figure it out for a while so I am assuming its in that category then again I can be extremely slow at times) and Gmod is a game built around mods so I highly suggest it. TES has a fantastic modding kit. I would probably suggest Morrowind but thats personal taste. Crysis also has a great editor kit however I seem to have problems with doing a lot of the more processor heavy bits. I cant think of any more. Plenty of games have kits and plenty of games dont. Even if they dont there is possibilities of programs that will let you mod or edit the things in the game.

I know for a fact there are more people that know more about it then me however I enjoy occasionally making a map or some other whatnot to dick around in. Good luck and have fun.

TC, try Unreal 3 or the Source SDK, but if you have no prior knowledge of modding, you could probably just start making your own Portal/TF2 maps.

The GECK isn't extremely hard to use, depending on what type of mod you're making. I started with a small 'cheat' mod for Oblivion and a Perk Pack addon for fallout 3, which you can check out here:
