I dislike the JRPG genre, but like WRPG's alot, o i might be a bad person to post here. But if you are going to buy something, buy the old black isle titles like "Planescape: Torment", "Fallout 1 and 2" or Baldurs gate.

PS. Dont worry. The first 2 Fallouts arent the FPS-style like the bethesdas game was..

Yes, yes they are good. I have lost many an hour in Oblivion...

Personally, I WRPG to JRPG, but you should definitely give some a go.

Get Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3. Also, Planescape: Torment, Neverwinter Nights series are great DnD RPGs and Dragon Age comes out soon, so maybe you should pick that up as well. And before i forget, The Witcher is an amazing game. Get that as well.

Please don't exclude the Classics like Diablo and Baldurs Gate- They are the core of WRPGs.

Generally speaking WRPGs can be traced back to D&D pen and paper.

I would go as far to say that what Final Fantasy VII is to JRPG fans, is as Baldurs Gate II is to Western RPG fans.

Edit: aside from all the hate that FFVII gets... / I've never seen people hate on Baldurs Gate.

Also - this sandbox thing isnt a feature of western RPGs - it is simply something new that has crept in.

Hell yeah, I love WRPGs. the gameplay is more fast paced in Fallout 3 and Oblivion, they also have more emphasis on non-linearity and exploration . But if your looking for a more story based experience, then try Knights of the Old Republic or Jade Empire. I personally love Fable I, but a lot of people didn't like it, and I can understand that, it defiantly has flaws

They're very different. Mainly, modern Western RPGs are all about freedom, about letting the player shape the story. Japanese RPGs, on the other hand, are more about using the player to tell an amazing story that is more set in its course. Gameplay styles differ too, the most noticeable being that WRPGs use real-time combat: it's generally less strategic, but a bit more hands-on.

That said, you'll probably enjoy them if you get the right ones. But if you're looking for the epic stories of JRPGs, you'll be hard-pressed to find them in Western ones. I'd recommend Mass Effect and the Knights of the Old Republic games if you want the smoothest transition.

For the record, though, a Western composer has yet to even parallel Nobou Uematsu, so though there are some amazing musical scores, don't expect a soundtrack of Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VII level.

KOTOR or MASS EFFECT, or anything made by bioware is basicly awsomeness.
What is up with Mass Effect? I didn't find it genre-defying. It was actually really bad in my opinion.
OT: I hate JRPGs, and I'd suggest all the Fallout games, Morrowind and Oblivion. I'm really tempted to buy KOTOR and Morrowind off of Steam.
I didn't say genra defining I just said fun, atleast imo.

I hate JRPG's, ever since I played my first one 7 years ago. WRPG's I find to have better everything really. But that's my opinion. Make your own.

How about you get yourself Jade Dynasty by Bioware. It takes place in China essentially, but is an WRPG. I really enjoyed it, and if you have a 360 you can download it for like 5 bucks off of arcade.

hate at Mass Effect!? OMG!!! why did you think it was bad?

To reccomend some WRPGs go with Fallout 3, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Sacred 2(I think its a WRPG.)

Because Mass Effect needed to learn the meaning of, "Less talky, more do-y". It was confusing to navigate. I had no idea what to do, and half the time I never knew what was shooting me, since everyone seemed to hate me, just for looking at them weird. Too much using of the elevator.
Well, some people really like deep games. I know I do, though I couldn't get a handle on a third person shooter perspective and so never got very far in Mass effect. As for the elevators, those are basically replacements for "loading" screens.

If you wanna ease into an open world game go the Obilvion route, the 360 version is pretty user friendly and quests are easy to find. If you want a bit more linearity then go for Jade Empire, has an excellent story, fun combat and good characters.

I have to disagree with the Wrpgs only having real time. I've come across quite a few Real-time combat systems in Jrpgs.

They're very different from WRPG's for a single different.

JRPG and WRPG both have two different ideas of what "role playing" actually means.

In a JRPG you tend to follow a linear story revolving around set characters and uncover the pre-written story. This is playing the role of a character, in the same way an actor plays the part of their role. It's a fair view, and is a decent way of unravelling a good story.

WRPG's believe Role Playing to mean creating a character yourself. Usually involving appearance, what they use and what they use it for. While this makes characterisation in plot much harder it replaces the focus to a more sand-box view of the world outside the character. Usually you'll spend your time uncovering the story about the world or other characters, which is interesting in good WRPG's like much of Betheasda's stuff.

In short:

The World Ends With You =/= Fallout 3
But both are bloody good games.

Hm.. I've usually found they're okay. Their worlds are often just about as fun to explore but.. that said, I've always found their plots somewhat unsatisfying and their characters horrifyingly boring, and they rarely seem able to raise my character above being nothing more than a jumble of stats. Now, I know the more Japanese style RPGs go the other way and deny character customisation, often wholly, but that said, the RPGs that come from Japan and do have full character customisation.. why am I never unsatisfied, or feel like my character is just a bunch of numbers.

It's one of the reasons I love Phantasy Star Universe to bits - my character there feels like a real character ( even if they aren't the main character in the single player storyline - if anything that actually helped ). Although of course, that's an MMO, but I include it because it has that Single Player story mode.

Not to criticize WRPGs and their fans, but most on the list are repeats of what others have already said, EX: Fallout 3 and Oblivion. Then again I have to take into consideration what Therumancer said that WRPGs are harder to make so they are rare.
Hm...Well, Sandbox is good and all, but I know they're on the 360, which I do not have. I'm sorry I didn't say this beforehand! *bows respectfully* So is there any for say the PS2 or PSP, even the PS3 since I'm thinking of buying one soon.
Also, I do love the good storytelling and interesting characters to meet, so if there's any out there I'd like to know them. [I also do enjoy the grind]
Again, sorry for not making this clear beforehand.

Okay, so I've been a fan of JRPGs for a while. But I've never played a WRPG like Fable or Oblivion. So I have to ask:
Are they any good? If you are only an FPS fan, do not post in this thread.
I'm an avid fan of RPGs JRPG, WRPG, CRPG independant european titles whatever they are good in their own way unlike JRPGs they tend to be more free roaming and make you rely on your initative more talking ot the right people, exploring the right places. And they are not so much on rails as JRPGs though I would argue JRPGs tend to have much stronger character development even if it is linear.

As for good WRPGs? Do you mind old games if not Planescape Torment, Fallout series (I personaly think 1 sucks but eh) Baldurs Gate, Gothic series, Arcanum, Throne of Darkness, Diablo series maybe Icewind Dale though I personaly thought it was terrible.

For more modern titles Neverwinter Nights series, Elder Scrolls, Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, Sacred, Mass Effect uhh Dragon Age... I hope stupid European game release setbacks *mumble*.

Most of these have probably been repeated but like hell I'm shifting through 2 pages of posts.

Maybe it's just the culture differences, but I prefer WRPG's. They usually have artwork and gameplay elements that just click with me better as a Westerner.

Regardless of whether or not you think you'll like them, give some WRPG's a go. You may be surprised.
